I was wodering wether there was a more exspensive hobby than boating as i seem to be spending fortunes on boating and getting little pleasure . I don't mind spending if it makes me happy but at the moment the pleasure return is minimal. Recent expenses marina fees ££££ , antifouling anodes hidden extras when out of water, mechanical repairs ££££, weather damage repairs £££, cabin modifications ££££, electronic gizzmos ££££, safety equipment £££$. I could go on . I think flying to the moon would be a cheaper hobby. Any suggestions !

Flying has got to be way more expensive. What with flight worthiness checks and engine/airframe maintanace etc.

As far as pleasure for your ££££. I went on an "invataion only" shoot just after christmas. £600 for the day. All the beaters put up were two pheasant. £300 a bird, and after they were hung and cooked, tasted like crap!

Stick with the boat. I bet you have at least a couple of outings this year that will be bliss and they'll stick in your mind for years to come. Of course you'll have the crappy ones too. Thats Life!!

Wha'dya mean "I'm always playing with this engine" its the only way to get it to run!

Keeping a girlfriend without the wife finding out. Just as expensive and a lot more exciting!

Salmon fishing on a private river. You have to pay vasts amounts of money per day but still not guaranteed to have the right weather or have fun!

Flying a twin engined aircraft, at last count £280 per hour if you please. Perhaps we are all in the wrong business!!!
Boating can be expressed as Standing in the shower throwing £50 notes down the plug hole! ang enjoying it. Masachistic or what.

when you buy a boat you open up a big black hole and money constantly pours in, however few people aspire
to owning a sizeable boat like yours Mark, so look at it as an acheivement, albeit an expensive one.
Still think its worth all the expense cos I cant think of anything that gives you the sense of freedom that cruising.
does.
And just the feeling of planning a course and successfully completing the cruise, gives enormous satisfaction.IMHO

Re: hobby or status symbol

Boating is NOT an expensive hobby unless you make it so.
Lots of people are happy with an old heap moored up a little side creek somewhere. It gets them on the water for next to nothing.
If people feel the need to keep their massive marine mortgage shiney monsters in the fancy fashionable south coast Golden triangle marinas with their deep breath mooring fees then that is their choice.IMHO.

Exercise is bunk.If you are healthy, you do not need it;if you are sick you should not take it.

Got to be rallying, I did this before boating and believe me to do a championship you are talking at least a grand an event plus anything that goes wrong with the car like a gearbox, axle full engine rebuild, plus it was not really a family thing so at least with boating then you can all come along for the ride and holidays etc, if you look at the annual cost of boating on the southcoast then it still makes 4 weeks boating look cheap compared to a 2 wek stint in America doing the Disney run, trust me I have just done it, I could have moored the boat for another year in Lymington for what the 2 weeks cost me, as I have sold the boat in Lymington we are now looking at other boats and other places to moor the next one, the south of Spain looks good, just done a recce of Portugals Algarve, not that cheap to moor in Vilamoura but getting quotes from Lagos and the new marina just down the coast, as it is tidal you get a proper pontoon, so no rope around the prop etc.

Also cheap flights from our local airport east midlands on BMI baby just gone from Stansted for 50 quid return, only 22 euros to Vila in a taxi so no rip off there.

Mark - presumably a hobby is supposed to give one pleasure. I'm sure there are more expensive ones than boating, but if the pleasure element is missing or negligible or the cost is causing problems, then surely it's time to bite the bullet, pack it in and find another, more rewarding pastime. OTOH, you might be seeing light at the end of the expense tunnel, in which case, hang in there. All IMHO of course.

charter
the boat is 99% of the time ready to standard
if you want to try a new area you can just like that
it is cheaper than having a boat by far
i calculated for chartering i could spend 7 weeks chartering for the cost of runnning the sort of boat i would want.
i donot have that time so charter whatever wherever.
A friend said to me there are 2 great days in owning a boat
the day you buy it and the day you sell it and the day you sell it is the best.

If it Cooks Flys or Floats, Rent it.
