Just got back from Hamble Point, had a great couple of days looking around the Marinas. Just to get ideas re: What we want! We looked at the Beneteau 411, Jenneau Sun Odyssey 40 and then a Hanse 400, Any recommendations for a Mono Hull, Cruising Yacht (Med), we still come back to the bed issue. (BIG) OK we know we will be making Love under the Stars /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. but Chrissy still likes to sleep. Sun Odyssey not bad (bed) must be aft cockpit. What are your thoughts of buying new??? oh my god don't we go on.......Budget 120000 Euros. Want to buy in the Med, any ideas who we should contact. Thats all for now.
PS: Getting urgent coming out 1st 2nd week in September to Lefkas.. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Whenever I see a Hanse, I always think they are nice looking yachts before I see the make.

My decision was based on number of bed spaces, large aft cabin, plus sugar scoop with steps for swimming and diving.

Why must it be aft cockpit?

Welcome to the forum /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You'll certainly find prices better down here in the Med but there is more choice in the UK especially on the Hamble. From personal experience I would recommend Almerimar as a good place to check out - access is very easy from Almeria airport, the agents are good and if you decided to buy here you would find the support you need to get things in order, keep the boat here for a while, have work done.

Don't forget the yacht search resource on this website - it is the best of them all.

Let me know if you'd like the contact details of one or two brokers here.

You're going about it in the right way: go and see as many different boats as you can, build up an idea of what you like, what you need, which features are high on your wish-list, etc...
I have to agree with Richard Faulkner, though: if you want a big bed, then why o why are you hell-bent on an aft cockpit?
I reiterate my invitation from a preious post: come and look around our moody 422 in september when we're out in the Ionian, you'll be surprised! (And no, I'm not trying to sell her here- she's not for sale, even for 250000 Euros!) I just know that talking to others who'd gone through the same process before us, and viewing their boats, helped us a great deal in deciding which boat we wanted, and what we didn't want!

IMHO I would reckon about 10 % of expat. boats in Greece are for sale. The best [highest]prices are to be obtained at the end of the season because chaterers like the life, get the bug and want one.

But if you want an ex charter boat at the end of the season is usually the best time.

Don't forget to budget for VAT. Most modern boats have been used on a VAT free basis so beware. There are also iffy documents about. Check with UK Custom's opinion. They wont say 'yes ok' but they will say 'no'.

I went through the same process, and was surprised:

When I went to Southampton Boat Show in 2003, (or was it 2002?), I decided that i wanted something over 40ft and less than 45ft, and that there was no way I would have a centre cockpit - I knew I would be banging my head in the alleyways, (which I do, but it's worth it).

What changed my mind? I did a weekend sail with my father just after he bought Rogue, and loved everything about her. From there on in, it was a Moody 44, and i saw very little to change my mind. Pure coincidence that Jeff decided to sell almost on the day that I decided it was time to buy.

Hi There!,
As Scarlet has said, end of the season is a good time to look and there are many agents based in the Athens/Piraeus area. Take your time though and don't appear too desperate!! There are bargains to be had here but also some not so good deals too!! Would be happy to act as an impartial advisor too, if you needed it!?? Can't advise on what to get as far as new or nearly new boats are concerned, as old wooden boats are more my scene, but there are plenty on this forum who can, however I can offer free accomodation if you find yourself in the Athens/Piraeus area in September. Will be happy to welcome you on our home, currently based in Piraeus, if your search brings you this way...........
Best of luck, there is certainly plenty to choose from but personally in all seriousness I would put other criteria above the size / location of the bed, as my main concerns for buying a liveaboard! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

will keep in touch.

Hi
A few people have told us that having a Aft C especially sailing in the Med is practical, i.e. you live more uptop than down below, and sleeping in the forecabin is cooler!.
Here what you say regarding CC. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We are searching the web to have a look at Moody's 38 - 46ft.
we haven't been aboard a Moody as of yet.
Regards
Ian and Chrissy

The forecabin is only cooler because the aft cabins on aft-cockpit boats tend to be small, stiflingly hot "coffin-berth" type ones...
You're quite right about living more up top than down below in the Med, but that's precisely where a centre cockpit comes into its own: you get more privacy when you're stern-to the town quay, and the space you loose in the saloon (where you're not, because you're living up top), you gain in the massive aft cabin!
Next question!

I have to admit that our cockpit is quite small, and the afterdeck is so crowded with stuff, you cant put a couple of chairs out there. I must also admit to looking jealously at some of the more modern very spacious aft cockpits - but I know they dont have the comforts that we have below.

Sleeping in the forward cabin at sea in any kind of sea is impossible, and our aft cabin is cooler than the forecabin when all the windows are open.... it's even cooler if we have the windscoop over it.

It's always a compromise, but i wouldnt swap the aft cabin or any part of our layout for a bigger cockpit.
