Hi,

Bought new PC base unit which I use with old Medion Monitor. All is well until I try to run some graphic intensive programmes. (well OK Sim City 4 and X2 if you must know!). Run the game and monitor seems to lose signal and turn itself off!
Hit Ctrl alt del and it sparks back into life. If I then terminate the game it goes back to Win Xp no bother. Even dafter thing is that when I first ran a game (X2) on it it worked OK. Subsequently no joy. Computer is AMD2.2ghz with FX5200 graphics card.

Apols for unashamed Non boatiness of the qu but there seems to be lots of 'putery type knowledge hereabouts!

Cheers,
AJ

Couple things worth checking,
1 does XP recognise monitor.
2 are the games compatable with FX5200 graphics card, may need to check website to see if possibly patches available.

How computery are you? Can you go into control panel/system/device manager., and interpret what's there? any yellow exclamation marks against 'monitor's if you click on + to expand view.

I suspect you simply have an incompatability between game and screen driver. What is screen resolution set at, and can games be set to use different settings?

Best bet is to see if any up to date screen drivers are available

This is an easy one.

The monitor is not capable running the resolution you have set the game to or is not a 100% compatible with XP.

Some of the old monitors will only run, say up to , 1024 x 768, so if you set the game to 1280 x 1024 the monitor will not run that resolution.

Maybe yours is less than this, how old is your medion monitor? Others seem to have issues - http://www.driverforum.com/monitor4/2541.html

Personally, with an awesome PC like an Athlon 2.2Ghz I would invest in a good screen and get gaming!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I didn't honest! Although I cant follow why it did work and now it doesnt. My level of computer knowledge peaked with the BBC B in 1984 and has been on a downward spiral ever since. Have checked the driver and downloaded one from Medion website but it is not compatible (no digital certificate) with XP so I am loath to try it! Monitor is 4 years old and at the budget end of the range. (bort original computer at Tescos!) Will continue to fiddle and see what I can do. Many thanks for advice received so far!

Cheers,
AJ
