emails we can recover, that's not a problem, recover those before anything else
Do a search in safe mode for any files that are *.dbx and *.mbx for any older files
There may be many of these for each user on your computer, you need to find and save all of them
Safe mode won't go on the internet as it only enables the most basic functions. You can enable network mode if you are on a network which gives you a bit more functionality, but don't expect to dial into an ISP in this mode, it's very limited for very good reasons.
Try this
boot into safe mode
do START RUN and type the following.
CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
You may get lucky and get access to the alternate password setup application.
If you do get lucky - click the "users must enter a username and password" save the clear the check box and save again and reboot.
I got the master disks to run from the CD in the end and have spent many happy hours reloading all the software, we are also back online at work, the fire didnt damage the server and it was only the power failure that caused all the problems, lots of lessons learnt, camera in lift to see who is stuck, alarm in lift couldnt be heard over fire alarm, overnight security was a problem with no back door, fridges all went smelly, no burgler alarms, the hired generator was then a risk in itself from vandalism, we had to build it into a huge wooden shed for security - then the residents complained about the noise, now the road has to be dug up to relay power lines and then there are the assessors from the 5 or 6 interested parties, builders, insurers, landlord, us, tesco's below who had to shut for 6 hours, ho hum
Amazingly MS cater for such scenarios. Stick your XP home CD into the cd drive (you may have to go into the bios and make the cd drive a bootable device), when it boots select repair. I'm sure Microsoft have the no how more than anyone else?
