xp, wont recognise my user log in, where has it gone?,
worked last night
I can get into safe mode, but dont know what to look at, its all slowed down to a snail, it gets stuck at the windows xp log in window, the blue line stops for ever

I hope it isn't the same problem as happened to me. Computer working fine one day, next day wouldn't allow log-in.

Turned out to be a faulty hard drive. As the computer was only about three weeks old it was replaced with a new one straightaway.

Hopefully your problem will be something much simpler.

It happens occasionally, and is a pig to fix.

First, boot normally, then press ctrl/alt/del three times when you get to splash screen. You may be lucky and a pop up box will appear, and you can enter username and password.

Morely likely the passwords file is corrupted

Try 1. Boot the system using safemode. 2. Go into control panel. 3. Go into user accounts. 4. click on a username. 5. Click on remove password. 6 repeat this (4 and 5) for each username 7. Reboot the system in normal mode.

If this doesn't work (may work on XP home, won't on XP pro) then there is a way of booting from a linux OS on a cd or dvd

its freezing on the splash screen, but in safe mode, in the user environment it says cannot load the users profile, I have deleted the password, oh dear

xp home, it lets me do most things, no internet, all quite slow
where do outlook exppress saved e mails live , they have disappeared, prob due to no user profile

Unless you have a friendly geek nearby, to go delving deeper in, which I can't really do from a distance, I suspect your best bet (given you copied off your data recently) is a reinstall of XP
