I am in the process of purchasing a 22' bilge keeled yacht and am now looking for a mooring in the New Forest area. Where is a good sailing club who have moorings and an active sailing program.
I think you will be very lucky to find a sailing club anywhere in striking distance of the New Forest with an unoccupied mooring available for a newly joined member. There are usually long waiting lists.
You could try Marchwood Yacht Club or Hythe. Easily within driving distance of the New Forest, bit further by boat ! I was 3 years at Marchwood. A very sociable club and probably the most reasonably priced moorings in the area.
Marchwood sailing club may have moorings at the moment, Cracknore hard at Marchwood also may have some but access is not as good, I used to be a member of Hythe sailing club but you had to start off with one of thier inner moorings before you can get a deeper one so maybe no good to you.
Maybe Calshot Activities centre is worth a call as they have a limited amount of moorings Also Ashlett Creek sailing club has some drying moorings.
There are mooring bouys off Hythe pier I just left the office to check they have mooring but they cost so little that many keep the mooring just in case they may want to use them but leave them empty, these are run by ABP (associated British Ports) give them a ring as thay also have other moorings in Southampton Water, look on there web site.
Sorry I don't have any numbers but a google should find them
I'm a member at Hythe Sailing Club, on Southampton Water, and they have spare moorings at present, both deep water and shallow moorings. I don't think you'll find any cheaper moorings on the south coast, and they are a nice friendly club with a new clubhouse and good facilities. You don't have to serve an apprenticeship on the inner rows of shallow moorings: if you need a deep water mooring they are available. They have just settled a new lease with the local authority and are now putting in place an exciting sailing programme, and are looking at organising open meetings back on the Waterside.
If I remember rightly you have to live within a 25 mile radius to be eligible for a mooring. 6 years ago I applied for membership and was told that because I live 26.3 miles from Hythe Sailing Club as the crow flies i would not be able to have a mooring. Membership application halted right there !
Ah times change - the 25mile rule has been dropped! It was only originally in place in order to ensure that if there was a problem with a boat or it's mooring, the owner could get to the club in reasonable time; with modern transport and communications it was felt that there was no need to keep this rule any more. If you'd like to join Hythe, I'm sure that you'd be made very welcome (and you can bring your boat)
It certainly looks like a very good club. Will give it some thought. However, soon giving up my current mooring in favour of my new piggyback trailer with the intention of exploring new cruising grounds.
Thanks.
I imagine Hythe moorings are quite exposed in an easterly.
I think Hythe certainly has moorings but some are a long way from their pontoon which is not all-tide accessible. A long row against the tide for some of them... I have been there once and the Sonata that I was on was trying to jump onto the pontoon as ships passed. However they are nice people there, and I hope the redevelopment of the RAF/US base next door doesnt mess them up. A proper sailing club.
On the Hamble there is more likely availability of moorings for boats that can take the ground or are shallow draft. I am moored on my Hamble River SC mooring next to a Squib that arrived with its owners this year on the Hamble from Essex. A shock to their wallets, the river taxi actually cost money rather than being free with the mooring .
I only got the space for my GK24 because they thought it was shallow draught. The price I pay is being jammed to the mud for up to one hour of a low spring about once every three months.
