SWMBO & I are starting to think about the time coming when it is time for us (well me) to go home. It's at least three years away but given the way of things, we perhaps ought to think about waiting lists etc now. Does anyone have any recomendations for good moorings or obtainable moorings in Cornwall or Plymouth Sound?
 
Join Saltash Sailing Club if you want to be relatively near the sea. Otherwise try Weir Quay (it's on the Devon bank of the Tamar between Cargreen and Calstock). Plymouth marinas are expensive - but aren't they all?

[/ QUOTE ]In addition to the above, Torpoint Mosquito might be worth asking. Cargreen SC has some morrings up the river as well. Don't know if they have any vacancies.

We 'borrowed' a mooring through the club for a couple of years until one became available for us to buy. (We still have to pay ground rent and maintain it though!)

If you want a Marina berth rumour has it that Sutton Harbour has vacancies at the moment.
 
If you want a marina berth you could try going for a few months winter berthing at Yachthaven or Mayflower - at the end of the short term contract they usually ask if you are interested in an annual stay. You could also try putting your name down for a Cattewater mooring - lengthy waiting list but they do turn round quite a few each year. Also all the previous recs as above - joining a local sailing club is definitely a good start. If you are a civil servant PM me for a better deal!

Boating World at Landrake, way up Lynher River is very good, if you want a lift out and winter storage, very reasonable on costs ..
 
Slightly furtgher from the sea, but closer than Weir Quay is the Cargreen YC. Its moorings currently have a waiting list but locally resident members are fast tracked to the top. Max draught is 2m approx.

You don't say which side of the Tamar you will be on. It makes a big difference as there are no marina berths on the Cornish side and a hike through Plymouth would take a long time. If you want a mooring only then you could get to it from either side unless it was over in the Cattewater.

If you're staying with the Foxcub I imagine you would be able to use a drying mooring. They are easier to find around Millbrook, Torpoint or the Lynher.
 
James is correct in his post; but as Mooring Officer for the Cargreen Yacht Club I can advise further: there is indeed a Waiting List for the purchase of moorings, but I have a number of deep water moorings available for Annual Rental. PM me if you would like further information.

[/ QUOTE ]I agree - don't know how he gets away with those prices. Members of Weir Quay YC pay a fraction of the prices for their moorings compared to what the yard charge for its moorings on the same bit of river!

I'll be on the Cornwall side but who knows, I may well be working in Plymouth. The idea of summer evening sailing appeals which might make a Marina in Janner land worth a look.

I can't see us still having Merit by then. She would be the perfect vessel for exploring the Tamar, St Germans and Lynher, but SWMBOwill probably have won herself the right to a flushing toilet and a propper galley by then.
