Moorings in Majorca

Can any one help - we currently have a marina mooring on the Hamble but are considering moving our boat out to Majorca, given the weather in this country!!!

The problem is the marina moorings appear to be very expensive and I wondered whether a buoy type mooring is possible/cheaper. I appreciate security could be a problem but I am not sure?

We have a Fairline Targa 30 and therefore need a 10 Metre mooring. We would probably take the boat out of the water for a period of time for normal maintenance

Any thoughts advice much appreciated.

missjose, I am currently moored in Club de Mar, Palma myself. Firstly, there are a few temporary mooring buoys in popular bays which have been over anchored but there is only one place that appears to have buoys for permanent mooring and that is Andraitx. However I wouldn't suggest that you moor your boat on a buoy anyway for the simple reason that, if a gale is forecast, you can't get there quick enough to secure your boat in a marina. Last year several boats attached to buoys in Andraitx were washed up on the breakwater as a result of a gale. Really the only safe place for your boat in the Med, when you live in the UK, is in a marina with staff who check lines regularly and good security. You can forget about storing your boat on the hard for long periods because there is very little hard storage area and it costs as much if not more as leaving your boat in the water.
Take a look at http://www.mallorcamoorings.com/ to see where the marinas are located. The weather is slightly kinder on the south and south west parts of the island and these areas are closer to Palma airport although transport links around the island are now pretty good. The good news is that the recent matriculation tax purge has freed up a few berths in some marinas now and you should have less of a problem finding a berth but many marinas will still say that they are full. It's worthwile taking a trip to the island and visiting marinas that you like the look of to discuss available berths. Most marinas are very poor at answering e-mail and phone enquiries

We are based in Alcuidia in the north of the island. I agree with Mike that buoys are not readily available and are not really a good idea given the unpredictable weather and distance.

You should find a 10m mooring - the marinas are generally quieter this year - but, again as Mike says, dont expect to get one by e-mail or phone. You really need to get out there and "eye-ball" the marina staff.

Ahmmm, alternatively you could consider buying a boat already out there, Med specced and with a berth...................

Thank you for your reply you confirmed my thoughts. I have visited the Island quite a lot over the last four years and will be out again in October (half term) so will go investigating. Have you any thoughts as to what is a reasonable cost/charge for a ten metre marina mooring?

I pay about €14k pa for a 15m mooring in Palma so I guess a typical 10m mooring would be about €8k pa but thats just a guess
 
Probably about right as an average Mike but there are cheaper and more expensive, Alcudia marina rate for 10m berth is about €6K but Cala Dor quoted me €11K! - mind you might be cheaper now given the current economic situation
 
Crikey, when was that? It was last year whwn they quoted me €11000, but everywhere was full then and perhaps they were just applying market forces....(thats the polite way of saying they were trying to rip me off)
 
It used to be around the 6K mark, prob cos I have been there since 2003 so get a hefty discount - no more though as have just sold! :(
 
As I understand it, the extension at Adriano is only to increase the number of superyacht berths ie 30m+ so I don't see how that will affect 'normal' berths

I have made contact with Mallorca Moorings who have directed me to FIVESTAR YACHTS, PUERTO PORTALS, MALLORCA if anyone knows anything about them good or otherwise I would be grateful.

I am out during the school half term 26 October and will visit some of the marina's then.

My next problem, assuming I find a mooring is then moving Miss Jose by lorry or bring her round by sea - great fun/experience but probably more expensive.

I'm not sure it would help using a middleman, if you're prepared to go there and talk to the capitanias. Renting in Portals will of course be eyewateringly expensive. I was in Cala D'Or last week and they told me they have a few rental berths available, one 20m and a couple of 18s. They might also have smaller. They quoted $18k pa for an 18m, near the yacht club. you'd also have to pay for the yacht club, becuase CD without the club wouldn't be great imho. RCNP seemed to have plenty of empty berths, though I didn't ask if annual rentals were available
 
Agree with jfm. 5 Star are a boat brokerage concern and if they are involved with moorings, it will be mainly because they hope to get a commission from a sale rather than arranging a rent. You'd be better off just visiting the marinas personally if all you want is a rental berth
As for moving missjose, a sub 10m boat is going to feel a bit exposed on the longer legs across Biscay and possibly not have the range either so truck delivery would be easier and probably cheaper. Somebody like http://www.vandewetering.nl/gb/index.html will ship her to South of France from where you can coast around to Majorca. I used Van de Wetering to move my boat from Holland to Port St Louis in SoF and they were excellent. Don't be specific about dates and ask for a return load for the best price

Re moving boat by road.
I had Broom 39 brought back from Port St Louis SOF.The firm I used was Hainsworth(I think they advitise in MBM).They sent a lorry on the day I wanted and brought it back for less than other firms quoted for doing the job to suit them ie when they had a return load.
 
If you did go to Cala d'Or, there are also a few berths privately owned that are generally up for rent - you have to go round the maintenance guys surrounding the marina for more info.

YCD (yacht club cala d'or) - lovely place, nice pool and quiet relaxation away from the boat! Also good playroom for kids sub 5 in the basement....
