Moorings in Levkas

We would like to take our boat to the Ionian next season - she is currently in Sardinia. Can anyone offer advice as to cheap/secure moorings with reasonable access to an airport - I guess Preveza? I understand that Preveza has fights to the UK during the summer season. How easily accessible is Athens or any other airport outside these times? All advice gratefully received.

There are ad hoc free insecure moorings in Preveza and a commercial marina in Levkas which charges UK prices. Preveza airport is open 1/5 to 31/10 for charter flights but last year had three flights a week to Athens by Olyimpic year round.

Just moved mine to Lefkas this year.
I'd heard about the options at Nidri but felt that the marina was a better first step as I was concerned about handing the keys over to a stranger and having the boat swinging free in the bay at Nidri. For our first year I also wanted easy access to chandlers, engineers, supermarkets, taxis etc - these are on site at Lefkas
Lefkas annual marina price isnt bad at about 3000 euros for a 34 footer and Spiros and the girls in the office are quite helpful but if you do go for the marina option be sure to ask for a berth away from the bars as the music starts at midnight sometimes !
BTW Taxi to from Preveza airport is about 25euros and Preveza is the only sensible airport option although its no picnic on a summer Sunday when thousands of people line up to go through 1 baggage scanning machine. I ended up flying via Athens in June and this wasnt too easy as the Easyjet flight doesnt really connect well with the lefkas to Athens flight. Preveza charter flights start to close down mid Oct. Im hoping to go out last week and intend to Easyjet Athens and rent a car for the week

I can personally recommend Preveza Marine on the shore opposite Preveza. It is one of three yards all of which have hard-standing ashore but no berths in the water other than a waiting buoy. It is an excellent and cheap place to leave your boat if you just want to leave it and go home. However, as there are no berths in the water it is not a place to spend any length of time on board. I can certainly also recommend Preveza marine having left my boat there
for six winters. Their hydraulic lifting trolley will launch you in 15mins!!
Staff are friendly and speak good English and their chandlery is well stocked.
I even bought my Suzumar dinghy through them.
Try Satellite travel for charter flights to Preveza airport.
Otherewise Easyjet or Olympic to Athens. Followed by bus
to Preveza or the "crop sprayer" air connection. If you book through
Olympic your luggage will go right through to Preveza (in theory).
I am now up at Monfalcone near Trieste but may well return to Preveza
next year.

[/ QUOTE ] Each to their own, of course, but there is absolutely no way I would ever have my boat lifted with a hydraulic trolley. 'Boat-wreckers' my surveyor calls them. The entire weight of the boat is taken on the pads with nothing under the keel. Fortunately, Preveza Marina also have a Travel Hoist so all is well.

I've been based in Levkas for last 12m and support the comments above. We like Lefkas as a town but paying the marina prices against the "risks" of leaving boats unattended elsewhere is a personal thing.

One thing I'd add is that many people use the bus to Athens from Levkas, approx 25 euros and 5 and 1/4 hours. A bit tortuous but as was mentioned flights don't tie in well via Athens. Not so bad for long periods but a bit much each way if only going out for a week. About 5 buses a day each way something like 0700 through to 2030.

MedMan, both Preveza marine and Nautec in Monfalcone where I am now,
intially lift with a travelhoist but then often transfer to the trolley since
the boats can be packed closer together this way.
Any well built boat should be fine resting on four large rubber pads and
a further support under the bow. In fact if it's not, is it seaworthy!?

Warning

I must disagree with your contention that 'chariots' are ok for all well built boats.

1] Etaps should not be lifted on these because of the double skin construction. The rubber pad does not 'give' enough to spread the load over more than an area the size of a hand and no weight is carried on the keel.
Etaps are not designed to be lifted with these gadgets .

On any boat, unless I was sure of the strength of constuction at the point where the pad is to be sited I would refuse.

2] Yard workers are very experienced in moving boats but rarely have boat building skills, leading to them not knowing the damage they can do and have done with a wrongly placed pad until they actually put the chariot pad through the bottom, as they have done on a Catlack. Not Preveza Marine.

To my knowledge, because they have had so much boat moving expereince they are reluctant to listen to an owner with much more limited experience. Hence the accident mentioned.

I can see the advantage for the yard doubling the number of boats that can be stacked together. However if you want to clean or work on the hull of the boat this has an obvious disadvantage.
