Moorings for London Olympics

Hello and welcome.

It depends on your type of boat. If you have a bilge keeler and arrive at the top of the tide then Leigh Marina is right next to Leigh-on-Sea station for C2C trains to West Ham, Fenchurch St etc. Not much of a marina but also near pubs that do decent grub.

I don't suppose Gravesend YC have any spaces left but worth an enquiry.

On the Crouch there is Burnham of course and Bridgemarsh (for Althorne Station) but not a quick service to London although it will go to Stratford (change at Shenfield).

I guess you could consider Ipswich Haven and Neptune Marinas in the middle of Ipswich. They are about half a mile walk to Ipswich Station which has mainline 'fast' trains to Liverpool Street. You may be able to get a stopper to Stratford or change somewhere.

If you can negotiate a mud berth or one of the river moorings, you can walk no distance to the station at Wivenhoe and catch a direct line to Stratford.

Titchmarsh is a long way from the station.

Trains from Walton take 1hr 20 and cost twice as much as from Leigh.

Special Olympic train tickets are being sold - 4 of us in the rush hour Leigh to West Ham (40 mins) £9.20 total return :) They suggest you walk from West Ham (30 mins) rather than battle on the Jubilee Line one stop to Stratford. For a 0930 event start they recommend a 0730 train:eek:

Medway Yacht Club are advertising moorings for the Olympics on their website. Train from Strood, a cab ride away, 30 mins into London. Trot boat etc.

Mooring holders were emailed a while back regarding this and if we minded moving/going on holiday during the event to help generate funds.

It's a hearty walk from Titchmarsh to the station, but not undoable. They hire bikes at the marina, or you could take your own and there should be somewhere to lock them at the station. As MoodySabre says, it's a slow train. The Clacton train through Wivenhoe would be a bit quicker . The sailing club visitors' pontoon is only for short stay though.

Burnham was mentioned. The marina is about ten minutes walk from the station and we get a train to London every 40 minutes. Takes 1 hour ten minutes to Liverpool St and 1 hour or a bit less to Stratford.

Burnham has the advantage of there being within a short walk of the marina a supermarket, or along the front lots of pubs and good restaurants (try the Tapa bar on the high street!) We've even got a cinema showing up to date movies a couple of weeks or so after the big cities.

Other East Coast marinas - apart from Ipswich - do tend to be in the middle of nowhere. Titchmarsh is great for exploring the Backwaters but its a long long way by foor to the town centre.

Burnham on Crouch... 5 Mins walk to Station. Hourly trains to Liverpool Street take about an hour .. Stopping at Stratford en route

Oooop's sorry just noticed Burnham Bob has already said this ... Except it seems that he walks slower than me

Was told that St Kats had availability - so enquired. I was sent a letter (via email) from a property co they've hired to market the place who advised me that I could take advantage of their Olympic offer of 17 days (no other options) over the Olympic period at a price of £3710

No. You didn't mis-read.

I thanked them for their letter but declined their kind offer.
