Good day,

I have been invited to an old boys school re-union at the Doggett and Badge pub by Blackfriars Bridge, London, are there any moorings nearby? I fancy taking the boat up there from Ramsgate.

As always many thanks for all replies.

Limehouse has better access from the River - longer opening times and good transport connections.

I keep hearing this from people, whenever I've rung them they say 9-5, whereas St Katherines stays open until 8:30 (depending on HW).

What time does Limehouse stay open til (or am I way off the mark here and you actually mean the lock gates are able to be opened for longer than at St Kats)?

All the marinas opening hours refer to the time they are able to operate either side of high water.
ie. 2.5 before and 2 hours after gives you a total window of 4.5 hours that they can operate the lock and get your boat into the marina.
It is normally dictated by the depth of the lock and any cill that the lock gates rest against to withstand the weight of water inside the dock.
Chelsea is a short window but Gallions is quite long.
St Kats.

FFS Read their websites?

I did, quite obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have know the opening times...

It was merely a misunderstanding of the terminology on my part, thinking opening hours meant the hours the marina was open for, as opposed to the window they were able to be open for around HW.

The actual lock office may only be open between 9 - 5 for payments etc.
Spent many a fruitless hour listening to a ringing phone before realisng the office is prob unmanned because dealing with locking in.

Me too - I haven't been that way for some time, but the lockie usually has a mobile number and should answer.

Likewise they don't answer their VHF - the kit is up too floors in a tower (daft) - should have a handheld.

Well it's a canal outfit; whaddya expect....

Yes, I meant capable of being opened. I've given up putting full details on a thread as most people don't read my stuff anyway ('sniff).

BW lock opening times used to be more flexible - depending on the tides, but they may have dumbed down / switched off because of the transfer to CART.

There is a booklet with all details, but I can't find it on their London website..

Went over to "Waterscape", which is now supposed to be defunct and got:-

"24 hour pre-booking always required. This lock can only be passed when manned by BW. Limehouse Lock is manned between 8am and 4pm (1 October -31 March) , 8am and 6pm (1 April-30 September) and at certain times outside these hours as tide permits and if booked in advance. Please consult BW London’s Tidal Lock Availability leaflet available on 020 7985 7200 or www.waterscape.com. Enquires / out of hours booking: T 020 7308 9930 if leaving a message please allow additional time. High water times as London Bridge, Lock unavailable for approx. two hours either side of low water. For passage between 24 Dec - 1 Jan all bookings must be made by 18 Dec. Closed Christmas Day."

BUT that was dated 2010

There's and click on the dropdown box for "london" more info on this page but it doesn't say more than the above and the lockies mobile number isn't published.

Took me ages to find - so I'm not surprised other folks don't bother.

GENERAL QUESTION - why is it (So often) so difficult to get information; particularly from public bodies. The Interweb and Goggle make it easier to do a basic search, but if the body's web page is carp you're lost.
