We're sailing up the Irish Sea and I need to lay the boat up somewhere for a few weeks whilst I travel for work. Somewhere along that coastline SW of Glasgow seem to be a lot of marinas and towns like Ayr, Troon, Largs, Fairlie and so on.

Does anyone know any reasonable moorings there as trying to avoid top whack marina visitor rates.

What weight is your boat? Matters if your looking for someone to lend you their mooring,

Try DRB marine ( 01436 831231 ) or the Rosneath Boatyard ( 01436 831 203 ). Both on the Rosneath peninsula. Helensburgh is the nearest station; 45 minutes from Glasgow with trains every half hour.

How big's your boat? My mooring will be free for July, but only up to 4 tonnes, 26' LOA, 6' LWS.

There aren't many long term commercial visitors' moorings that I am aware of, but you might try Fairlie Marina, Silvers (on the Gareloch) and the Royal Northern YC (also Gareloch). If that doesn't pan out, I'd recommend Port Bannatyne Marina is very friendly and charges £43/m per month in the summer.

Good suggestions. From Rosneath it can be quicker to take a bus or taxi to Kilcreggan and then the ferry to Gourock station.

Thanks for the contacts. We weigh in at around 17t. Any other suggestions of possibilities as far up as Oban with reasonable train links would also be great.

Crinan Boats have moorings. Taxi to Lochgilphead, buses to Glasgow from there.

Ardfern have moorings and a non-walkable-onto pontoon for longer stays, Buses to Oban and Lochgilphead.

Trains to Oban or anywhere north of Helensburgh are scarcer than smiling happy Highlanders, but as JD says there is a long (over 3 hours)but relatively frequent express bus service from Campbeltown to Glasgow, I live at Ardrishaig ( 2hours +from Glasgow) at the moment the canal waiting pontoon outside the sea lock is not being monitored, (the harbour master has retired), I walk the dog there twice a day so could keep an vague eye on things for you. Mind you would be joining the other local abusers of a facility intended for visitors to the canal. Some of the boats with moorings in Loch Gilp go out to Crinan or Achnamara for the summer but your boat is much heavier than anything here.

A 30 day Crinan (or any) Canal license this year is £41-40 per metre, 60 day is not a lot more, Bowling (in the Clyde)would be handy for travel but I am not familiar with what space they have, Port Bannatyne is probably better for you? If you were planning to use the Crinan anyway (not that I recommend it) that mitigates the cost. If you want to follow it up PM me.

At 17 tonnes must be a big boat (at least by local stsndards). Over 10 tonnes/ 40 feet (?) you may be too big for many of the regular moorings available, though commercial yards may have some large boat moorings.

Most of the visitor moorings I see are rated for 15 tonnes, though Gigha have a few 25 tonne ones. Mind you, there's a lovely big mooring buoy which nobody ever seems to use in the middle of Rolhesay Bay. The OP could probably go on that for a few weeks. Bit of a row to the shore, though.

Is that the one known as the plug ?

They have Sceptre the 12m yacht hanging on a mooring at the moment. Not sure on the attitude to short term visitors but they have lots of free yacht moorings available so they may be able to help you as a visiting yachtsman.

I taken their "mooring membership" for the summer and am impressed - they have a launch to take you ashore to the pier and the moorings are very protected

less than 2 miles by taxi to Helensburgh station which links into Glasgow

worth a try

Thanks for that. I'm a member of the Royal Yorkshire so they might like that :)

If a mooring around Gourock or thereby would be of interest, try talking to Andy Lancaster of Toward Mooring and Towage, contact details on that website.
He'll know of suitable ones around.
