Hi - we're about to buy our 1st small sail boat* and while looking around the North Wales area also trying to figure out where to base our boat around Menai Straights / Anglesey area

We've been to look at a few mooring places while viewing some boats in the area (Gallows Point/ABC Powermarine, Dinas Boatyard near to Y Felinheli/Port Dinorwic and Dickies Boatyard, but where still a bit unsure of how to get a swing mooring sorted.

I've looked at the Caernafon Hardour Trust's website which alocate a lot of Swing Moorings, but our prob is there dosen't seem to be any prices on there and to apply for one we'd need the boat and insurance already sorted

Moorings – Caernarfon Harbour Trust

So it's a little bit 'chicken and egg' for us, as we've still not bought the boat yet (a couple of very nice possibles though we've seen - all about 24ft) and obvs don't want to put in an offer for a boat if we've still yet to know where we'll store if for the year.

Just hoped to ask, does anyone know the ballpark prices for moorings for those three areas, or if there any any alternatives to the CHT?

We'd also be interested in Marina berth at Y Felinheli or Dickies, but so far I've not heard back from either (sent a couple of online enquiries) ? Guessing they're busy and/or full already

Many thanks for any help and suggestions, and hope I've posted this in the right part of the forum (very sorry if not)

- *We've completed our RYA 1+ 2 and looking to do some basic day sailing to start to learn and hopefully work our way up to Day Skipper / Coastal

Anglesey CC do moorings on the Beaumaris and Gallows Point side of the straits. They allocate a spot and you lay the mooring yourself or get one of the mooring contractors to lay it for you (used to be Davey Jones recommended or Stan Z-not so much) Our mooring at Beaumaris we had for 10 years was close into the shore and we could walk on and off up to about 1/2 tide which we liked and we parked on the main road 50 yds from the boat. This was out of the main tidal flow and was very sheltered. The deeper water moorings there are more exposed as are the moorings between Gallows Point and the pub there. Those moorings can get very rough at times and my friend who had a mooring there had solid water coming over his boat and times when it was not safe to get in a tender to go ashore.
A lovely spot though-I am sure you will enjoy it as there is lots of sailing to do in the straits when it is not suitable to go offshore.
