moorings and insurance

thought i would make people aware of what i found out recently when renewing my insurance.
i am lucky to live where i lay my own mooring and pay nothing to keep my boat there as do thousands of other owners around the uk.
when renewing my insurance i told them that it was not a proffesionally laid or maintained mooring ( this is not a service that is provided anywhere near this part of the country.
the insurance company refused point blank to insure it as it is not professionally maintained, i then tried three other companys with the same result.
i eventually went back to my original insurer and they agreed to insure it on the basis it dries out and i can access it, but they would not insure a non drying mooring.
so for all you people in the same situation as me have you checked your insurance properly because it is very difficult to find in the small print

Our insurers (Pole Star) stipulated that the mooring be lifted and inspected annually. Normal practice at Findhorn is to have the moorings inspected and overhauled by diver, and they accepted that as an alternative.

Which insurance company was that.
Although my boat is on a professionally laid and maintained mooring I do know the sailing club I belong to has a number of owner maintained moorings so it would be good to warn them.

Our moorings are lifted and inspected annually by a club barge operated by experienced club members who trained within the club and who get a small fee for the job. The team includes two retired school teachers (one also ex-RN), two retired engineers and two retired navy doctors. Are they professionals?

well, i am an ex chief engineer in the merchant navy and now an engineer in the gas industry and a sport diver, and they will not accept that as profesional, it has to be a professional diver / company ( i asume so they can chase them for damages)

So it begs the question "How does someone become the equiv of CORGI / NAPIT certified to maintain moorings? ..... I know there are courses ..... but do you have to pass a test and get a certificate? Or can I make a "professional" out of a "spotty school leaver" working for "Bodgit and Scarper Mooring Ltd"?

I guess I can so long as I have insurance incase he gets it wrong?

I think the 'professional' aspect is required from all insurers I have ever looked into.

navigators & general do not stipulate a professionally laid mooring - I have several friends acquaintances that have had lots of problems with so called professionally laid moorings - prefer to mess up myself but seriouisly where you can check the mooring when dried out this is not rocket science is it.

But they can't chase you via your own liability insurance if your boat goes walkabout.
