Some years ago someone posted a link to a little game where you had to moor a ship in a range of virtual testing situations: wind, tide, space etc.

Anyone remember it?

Reading the thread about Sunsail boats struggling to moor up, I thought a sophisticated version of the game could be very useful in teaching the basics. Does one exist? Anybody suggest a link?

There used to be another docking game, but that link does not seem to work anymore.
 
I've never come across an even vaguely useful ' sailing simulator ', and as for mooring & berthing I'd guess there are too many variables, it would take a massive effort to write the software and possibly a big powerful computer.

Pity as it would be very useful, both as fun for more experienced bods and a cheap intro for novices without crunching other people's boats.

In the meantime they've brought out a new version of ' Elite ', there's always the spaceship docking bit on that !

Yep, those are the sort of animation I was thinking of. Spooky things, when it goes wrong it feels like the real thing.

All they really need is a bigger canvas, some adjustable tide and wind (prop walk, different boats and optional springs maybe) and they could be very useful for putting stuff across. Guess the target market is too small and Sunsail yachts will have to just carry on hitting things at great expense.

I would buy the software, sure I would, and I am a legendary tightwad.
 
I've already suggested our club junior clubroom should have a few PC's with this sort of thing - as well as more mainstream games and tides, ports, sailing films etc.

If there was a bit more of a ' proper ' simulator available I'm sure clubs up and down the land would go for it, and the juniors would have to fight to get a look in ! :)
 
As a little aside, here's a story I heard about anchoring from a MN exam.

Examiner: You are anchored off a lee shore in a wind of F4. The wind rises to F6. What do you do?

Candidate: Let out another 2 shackles of chain.

Examiner: the wind now rises to F8, what do you do?

Candidate: Let out another 3 shackles.

Examiner: It has now risen to F10, what now?

Candidate: another 4 shackles

Examiner: Where are you getting all this ******* chain?

Candidate: Same place you're getting all this ****** wind.
