Having large problem with keeping aboat in Spain, does anyone know if it is possible to moor a British Reg boat in Portugal indefinatly, whilst the owner lives in another country.Iwas pondering the purchase of a small 30 year old yacht only to be snowed with paper and sucking of teeth, this is really a bad hair day! Any thoughts welcome.

Hi,

Don't know anything specifically about mooring a boat in Portugal,

but having lived there for 4 years and been working for Portuguese for the last 8, I can definately say that in general Portuguese officialdom means mountains of paperwork, unbelievably unreliable information and lazy "i've got my job for life, what do I care" beaurocrats.

An example, I moved to Oeiras halfway between Lisboa and Cascais and wanted to register my residency. There is an office in Lisboa and one in Cascais. I phoned Lisboa to ask where I should do it and they said Cascais. I phoned Cascais to ask where I should do it and they said lisboa. Phoned cascais and phone off hook. Next two days unable to get reply from Cascais. Finally got Cascais and they absolutely refused that I should do it there. Phoned Lisboa, no reply for rest of third day. So, decided that given my previous experience of how much of a hassle such things inevitably are and since I had already wasted three days without even finding out which office I should go to, I went to the bar and never bothered about it again! And I could speak Portuguese (OK not at all good, but I managed to read Lord of the Rings in Portuguese).
This is one of many examples, i could go on....

I don't want that to sound anti-Portuguese - most Portuguese (actually all that I know) think exactly the same, but they are more resigned to it than I can ever be.

My immediate reaction is to say if you thought Spain was bad then Portugal is definately not the answer (apologies to any Portuguese reading!), but like I said I have no experience with mooring a boat there.

However Portugal is a really beautiful country, I love the food and wine and I can't wait to get back down there in October....
