mooring fees for a quick stop

If you stopped at a small council owned marina in a 30 ft boat for 45 minutes would you expect to be charged and if so how much would be a fair price ? The season I ask, I stopped at a marina yesterday and went to the local hotel for a bar snack. 45 minutes later I called at the office to get the access code for the gate and was charged £4.00. I have no problems with being charged, but I have never been charged for short stops here before or any other marinas in my area. (North Antrim Coast)

Many reserve the right to charge but don't and others do (Boulogne for instance).

Usually, if I drop in to a marina, I check with the office (to get the gate code) and ask if there are any charges if I stay for a couple of hours. The answer is usually no.

Could it be that the marina in this case thought that you were taking them for granted by arriving and leaving the boat without letting them know ?

I only say this because you mentioned returning to the boat via the office to get the access code.

I don't suppose that £4 is unreasonable, depending on the size of boat of course.

in the past marinas on the Costa del Sol would charge you a days rate for a lunchtime stop, so you are looking at anything from 40€ to 200€. Some marinas have woken up to the smell of coffee and now charge 10€. Puerto Banus however still charge full whack. these prices are for a modest 18m yacht.

I would expect to go find the owner, and ask how much it was to stay before wandering off somewhere.
Why should the facility be free - It costs the owner to keep it open.

Things can be cheaper if you ask the price first, than if you ask the price after taking it.

If it's free then all well and good, but that should be seen as a bonus.

Victoria Dock, Caernarfon last Saturday - stayed for 45 minutes - no charge. Harbourmaster told us that it is free for visitor stays of up to 1 1/2 hours! Time enough for a half decent meal & walk around town. Full marks to Caernarfon.

I noticed you had gone out. But, be careful as you have been given the wrong information. If you check out the 'menu' for Victoria Dock the free period is only for 30 minutes. After that it is £8.

However, they do operate some discretion but if the 'wrong' person is on duty that day, you could get charged for overstaying the 30 minutes.

Yesterday we were given the 'correct' info, i.e. 30 minutes only for free. However, there does seem to be a bit of laxness with regards to the actual length of those 30 minutes for first time visitors.
