Mooring etiquette

Have a sharp knife lashed to a boat hook, when the little gits ram you, slice their boat open!! always good fun!!!

Plenty of interesting stuff here. Rafting is as old as sailing and in most harbours and marinas the choice is not your own. We once tried to raft to a Dutch yacht in Spain, having asked and were told NO, we ignored them - they were morred on the only ladder up the wall.

The trouble, for me, is we like the peace and quiet do not drink and find drunken conversations along the dock sometime after closing time very dull. Think of those you moore alongside.

Had this ....

Bembridge .... guy could see that my boat could not lay alonsgide another due to deck / stanchion heights etc. He told me to stay away from his boat when I called over that we were moving raft to him ....

As having no alternative - I ignored him and went alongside .... he did nothing .... no taking of lines, no fenders etc. etc. I ended up falling in the bloody harbour where I was so angry etc. !!!!

Do as you would be done by.

Most of us want to be left alone but during the Summer in most popular harbours you will have to raft-up.

Therefore I try to be as inviting and helpful as seems polite.

Put out fenders, take lines, help position boats so rigs don't clash in the night.

I'd not put out a sign saying 'please moor here' but do make potential neighbours welcome.

Absolutely. Also as rafting is going to be almost inevitable I prefer to welcome someone sooner rather than later and get it over with. That way hopefuly you can avoid the Rugby Club's charter weekend boat that arrives as the pubs open!

Tied up to poole quay once, no other boats there, a guy came alongside and started to get ready to raft alongside, said "take my warps" No! I said whats wrong with the rest of the quay? He just wanted to use me as a pontoon/fender! If there was no room, OK, no problem, but what a damn cheek, just because we are a big lump! In Holland rafting is a way of life, nobody would dare complain! But only when theres no space left. I have no trouble atall with rafting,

Happened to me too, We were in Honfleur, on the wall outside. We were on the inside, big and fat. Had two friends of our's along side, out side boat was a cat.(So thats 4 hulls deep) Huge gaps along the wall, then another cat by its self. This jumped up brit (Ok iam a brit to) came towards our friends cat waving ropes at them. They got most upset when nicely asked to go else were. Like we were the scum of the earth not to want a four boat raft unnecessesarily with all the ferry wash etc. They ended up along side the other cat. Ok I realise the wall isnt the nicest place to be, but we chose to berth there and we all chose to raft together. The skipper obviously was more concerned about his gel coat than the three other crew members who would most certainly have had trouble getting across our three boats. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
