Mooring downstream of Caversham bridge.

Just a quick question, is the mooring outside of The Riverside near Caversham bridge a Public Mooring ?

I think there is a section which is predominantly used by Salters (ie where the bollards are) but then slightly downstream of that seems to be ok to moor on. The Riverside restaurant looks reasonable but unfortunately doesn't get any afternoon/evening sun.

Following on Brayman's reply; usually Salters stick notices up if it's their mooring (Windsor for example). I'm sure I've seen all sorts of craft moored there.

I'm sure Byron's fount of knowledge will correct me - but the stretch between the two bridges on the nearside has lots of bollards; which I assume are left over from the days when there was a lot of industry on the river sides (both the Thames and the Kennet), rather than placed there for the use of any specific class of boaters.

It's the "off" season now and trip boats out will be like hen's teeth. In view of this year's lock closures French's boats will have retreated to Runnymede, and Salters@ to Oxenford.

Thats what I found curious, every where else there are trip boats its fairly clearly marked as No Mooring etc but not here. There isn`t any clear indication that its a 24 hour mooring either. I kind of assumed that the bollards there were for Salters but with no clear signage it could well be public moorings.

It is very difficult establishing who has what rights. Salters and others have some very peculiar rights indeed. I can think of one complicated instance where Turks actually own some Mooring Piles in the river, I believe they own the river bed there but not the bank. Windsor has always puzzled me and it may be that they actually own the rights just below Eton Bridge just as the Donkey House owns the mooring there.

Two years ago I moored just down river from the pub near a gated garden without any problem, Salters used the mooring in front of the pub and a hotel boat moored just below the bridge. The Riverside supplied me with water and I had a few pleasent evenings talking with one of Salters skippers who lived above the pub. He gave me lots of tips where to moor and we often cruised in company where I let him get ahead as he had a schedule to keep.
