Mooring charges

A lot of clubs have the mooring charges banded to a range of lengths. Probably on the dubious grounds that the bigger the boat, the more it cost, so the more you can afford! But equally, with swinging moorings, the bigger the boat, the heavier the ground tackle needs to be and the deeper moorings need more ground tackle. With trots, the larger the boat, the less moorings per mile, so a charge per foot could be justified.

Our Club charges per metre, but it seems to work fairly well, since the longer boats are wider, and can only fit some of the spaces.

If I were the proud owner of, say, a Hurley 22 I would not be very happy at paying the same mooring fees as the guy with 60 foot Swan or similar. Would you?

Ah! Well, back to wrecking

I think it makes quite a lot of difference, especially on a tidal, swinging mooring. I can't be bothered to do the calculation, but the swinging circle area occupied by a 60 ft yacht and a length of chain at low water is a lot more than the equivalent for a 22 footer.

Just ask youself, if every boat on a mooring was 40', would they get the same amount of boats in/on moorings? I doubt it, so there has to be some rationale.

You could make the case that in being charged by the foot, the bigger boats get off lightly.

Since mose marinas are limited as to the area they can occupy - why not charge by the area (e.g. length x beam) - roughly the square of the length.

On swinging moorings the critical factor is either the amount of space they require to swing (square of LOA) or the mass, so they should charge by the cube of the length.

There seems little justification for asking the owner of a 60' boat to pay only twice as much as a 30' when he is taking up 4 times the water, and has ground tackle 8 times the weight!

As a comparison David...

...just over the other side of the Colne, half tide drying moorings are a fixed price with a maximum size of 26 foot. Fixed price is about £110 +VAT for 12 months.

Full tide swinging moorings are restricted to 26 foot and are charged by the foot for either 6 months or 12 months.

All other moorings are Fore/Aft, Piled or Pontoon which are again by the foot and over a period of either 6 or 12 months.

Endy
