I’m considering a property in Staines that backs onto the Thames path and the river bank beyond. The path and bank is not part of the property and I believe ‘owned’ by Spelthorne council. Many similar property’s along that stretch also have the path dividing them, but have private moorings associated with the property. How do I establish whether I could do similar? The property I’m considering already has several poles in place to moor against but I don’t know how to establish whether it already has appropriate permissions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Below Staines Bridge the river bed is Crown property and managed (or not depending on your opinion) by the EA. To obstruct the navigation with mooring piles or a landing stage you will need a S.60 accommodation licence from the EA. If you call the main contact number 03708 506 506, the NCCC staff will put you through to the accommodations team in Reading who can advise if any licence exists already and what it pertains to.
