A bit of advice please.

I am looking to moor our mobo (permanently) at Portishead, later this summer. I popped down there the other day, and was shocked to see how built-up it has become, and how much buiding was ongoing. For those of you that moor there already, what's it like? Is Bristol a better bet? Is entrance/exit to the lock as daunting as the Quay Marina's video's suggest?

Many thanks for your feedback.

I'm moored at Portishead and really enjoy it here. It is very overlooked, and parking on the streets near the marina can be a problem for visitors, but I've never had a problem in the marina car park. It's handy having the pub nearby, and Morrison's is due to open soon which will be useful but not make the parking any easier.
It's peaceful enough though, and most people are very friendly. The lock is no problem at all, it tends to be a bit of a social gathering in there :)

I hear they only have berths available for sailing boats though ;)

Another thumbs-up for Portishead. Yes, the amount of building nearby is ridiculous, but that's a problem for the people living there, not for the berth-holders. There have been no parking problems in the marina car park since Quay Marinas restricted it to berth-holders only.

I haven't seen the video, but locking in or out is not a problem. Frequently a social event on the way in or out. It gets rather lumpy if it's blowing hard from NE, but that doesn't happen often.

Portishead is much more convenient than Bristol as a starting point for just about anywhere.

The lock at Portishead is no problem at all, very easy for a mobo. Don't worry about it, you should have no problems at all.

Building now reaching the end with the penultimate building being finished on the quayside. Morisons should be open in the next few weeks, no doubt this will bring other retailers to the area. Parking is now never an issue. Various places to eat including the Royal on the headland and only a few minutes walk.

Bristol is much more restricting, plus you have to take account of bridge swings and stop gates on spring tides. Just makes it hard work. Bristol is an easy overnight destination, but far far too restricting for me. You can't pop out for a few hours as the lock window is only 2 hours if your lucky and it takes 45 minutes to get down the river.

Yep, I was a bit concerned about tide and locking restrictions at Bristol. Also don't really like the city centre location. I was just so surprised at the amount of building. Not sure about locking being no problem. We have had some fun on the Severn. :)

Hi, we have had ours there for about 1 yr now and it has been great, the convenience of just popping out is the best thing.

I'll just plug my sons video as this was last night after work we decided just to go out and enjoy the good weather whilst we could.

and then there is my video that shows how built up it is!!

I do have another one that shows the locking in, I thinks its about HW +1.5 so not really challenging at all.

The locking is easy even for a mobo driver! :D The lock is deep and well sheltered so you wont suffer from being blown sideways. Only lock problem is that the capacity isnt great so you do sometimes have to book a slot.

Bristol is a great place to have a boat - think of all the city centre facilities you can walk to. A good night out without having to think about driving.

But Cardiff is better than both with three large locks, a decent area behind the barrage where you can play and 4 marinas. Plus walking into the city centre.

Many thanks Bosun. I want somewhere handy for Brizzle, but do not like City Centre's, hence Portishead. I have no problems motoring in and out of locks, but the I guess that timing is an issue due to depth and tide.
