Mooring at New Grimsby, Isles of Scilly

We spent a week in the Scillies last Summer, in New Grimsby and several other anchorages. From memory the buoys were well maintained and easy to use. Incredible anchorages and very happy memories you will have great time.

So did we. Very secure buoys in New Grimsby and lovely location. Using the advice in the Pilots we moved over to St Mary's as the wind came round to the South. BIG mistake. The swell was as bad as any that we have been in and we had three quite uncomfortable nights. Should have stayed on the nice big safe buoy!!! Absolutely stunning islands though and well worth the trip.

I'll anchor if I have to, or sail on if I have to, but would moor for preference. I will have the luxury of a professional skipper on board to help guide decisions, and I'll as for his thoughts on the anchor. The anchor hasn't dragged once set yet. I'm looking at whether to change the anchor, and am doing several weekends at anchor prior to this trip to help inform the decision as anchoring to date has been in benign conditions.

Have you got a second anchor? What if no mooring I have visited 4 or 5 times and usually most of the visitors are chocks and I have seen 2 up a couple of times in passing. Green Bay bryor is a great place for a bilge keeler.

Edit busy but in the bay not huge tidal flows even at springs

There are many fine anchorages around the IoS - including St Helen's Pool, The Cove - and many choose to anchor in New Grimsby Sound between the fixed 'Duchy' mooring buoys and the pier i.e. in the way of the inter-islands ferries.

I'd suck my teeth at lying to a 10kg Bruce thereabouts, and have used an FX-16 Fortress very effectively from a boat half your weight. The just-retired-after-decades-as-harbourmaster Henry Birch would always see you right, and the new chap Adam is likely to be just as helpful.

I'd still want an anchor with far more 'grunt' than that Solent Pick.....

If you want real peace and quite, anchoring in the Eastern Isles will be for you. We only anchored there overnight before leaving back to Falmouth. Deep water, very few boats, wildlife and sheltered (except SE). When arriving or leaving be cautions of Great Aurther which can be partly covered at certain tides.

Also the holding in new grimsby is not brilliant being sand.I remember dragging one night when the wind got up and fortunately tangling up with an anchored fishing vessel, Another boat went onto the rocks on tresco that night.
