For my sins (Never Volunteer, I know !) I have been asked to start the ball rolling on a revamp of my Mooring Association's constitution.

I am aware of the RYA's resources on the matter of Sailing Club Rules, but we are in a unique position of 'owning' a number of moorings and private beach access. The Association has done sterling work over the last decades in relation to pontoon building, laying very effective F&A and swinging moorings to a very high standard, and we feel the time has come to move the group towards being a more active and inclusive sailing and mobo community, to provide a basis for greater financial stability and provision of peaceful enjoyment of the moorings.

We have a Constitution and Rules, but they need polishing and a bit of pruning and development, and I wonder if anyone who belongs to a similar organisation would be willing to share (in sanitised version, no names, no pack drill :) ) the fundamental paperwork from their Association, please ?

TIA

That really is a tricky one !

Our club is all volunteer, the members sign off that we'll look after our topchains, then the ' moorings officer ' ( it's actually very informal ) organises winter inspections of the moorings and work parties to put things right.

One important point is nobody goes out on the mud alone - these are half tide moorings.

As yours will be a deep water job, I guess it will be more a case of agreeing among yourselves to pay for pro' inspection and work ?

Such arrangements are spiffing as long as everyone shares responsibility, but one rotten apple can of course have a domino effect damaging other people's boats.

One would hope never to have to use it, but some sort of punitive measure for neglected moorings might be handy ( a clause allowing boats on dodgy chains to be moved before they break free ? ) - and one of those underwater endoscope cameras one sees going cheap at places like Lidl.

Also proof of insurance - my lot, Amlin - used to be Haven / Knox Johnston / St Margarets - do not like boats left on moorings over the winter.

Thanks, All the technicalities are covered (I hope !) Andy. As the moorings are near a lot of Her Maj's kit, there are very strict rules about the inspection and assessment routines by a team of divers from professional contractors.

And yes, the insurance is a must-have as well.

But really it's the legal Constitution and Rules that are needed.

Have you searched on line for sample memorandum and articles of association for clubs and associations? They should give most details.

It is not 'broke'. The process has been initiated by the committee as part of the ongoing review of procedures and policies which any club or association should be undertaking. And, of course, all the members are aware of, and support the review.

It will incorporate the revised QHM requirements for moorings, which your own club is - presumably - actioning ?
