Slight leaks have started at 2 windows of our 29. Window frames are retained with screws on the outside but I can't see if there are nuts or anhchor bushes under frames in the cabin.
Does anyone have info on the window frame assemblies and the sealant used?.

as a temp. fix ....... get hold of auto windscreen sealer and run a bead around the frame outside.

this will reduce or stop the water getting through until you find out the real way to cure.

(I did it 2 yr ago on my boat and still trying to find the time to fix properly ...... but leaks stopped with the sealer .....)

Another short term fix for leaky windows is the wonderfully named "Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure". I've used it a few times - some leaks it fixes right away, others it can't cope with. But not expensive and worth a try.

Sounds like an adhesive to stop builders' trousers heading South! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I replaced the acrylic in the frames on our 29 but it was a few years ago and for the life of me I can't remember if the frame uses self tappers into the coachroof or screws into the inner frame! I'm not down the boat for a couple of weeks so can't check.

What I can tell you is that when mounting the reglazed frames back into into the coachroof I removed all the existing sealant and replaced it with neoprene tape from the window refurb people in Sevenoaks (can't remember the name offhand but they know all about these windows - if you can't find them with a search then let me know and I'll dig out the receipt). Have had no leaks since.

Hope this helps

Hi!

Be VERY careful about using Capt Tolley's stuff. It can have a very detrimental effect on some acylics used in boat windows. It happened to me! It took about a year before I spotted the problem, which manifested itself as crazing all along the lines where the stuff had been applied. I've just replaced all the windows as part of a major refit as the acrylic was, IMHO, severely weakened by the crazing.

Worth checking if your windows might be so affected!

Cheers

Jerry

Could be correct about the acrylic. My windows (actually portholes) are glass so no problems. Like with fabrics and solvents - test a sample small corner first!

The worst leakers I have removed and completely refurbished. This is not too difficult if you are careful. Remove window from hull, then carefully work out how to split the frame and remove the glazing. Clean out thoroughly and re-assemble with the correct grade of Sikaflex sealant (Glass/acrylic to frame) and different grade of Sikaflex frame to hull.

Good luck - it worked just fine for me.

Hi Gorb!

I fitted all my new windows about four/five months ago, but used the closed cell foam 'tape' as recommended by the manufacturers (and many others on these forums) which eliminated all the filthy hassle I seem to get using mastics!!

Wonderful stuff, and so easy to replace if I ever need to, as the windows will just drop out when the inter-screws are removed.

Cheers

The tape looks good! Can you let me know its name? I have two new windows to fit and would like to try it. Sikaflex is wonderfully sticky, but it gets everywhere!

HI Gorb,

I bought mine from one of the local chandlers here in Plymouth. It's available in rolls either 19mm or 25mm widths x 3 metres long. It's made/distributed by PSP Marine Tapes Ltd in Southampton. Their tel. no. is: 01 489 581811 Fax: 01 489 885304.

It is specifically for 'bedding in windows and deck fittings', so your own local chandlers should have it in stock.

Hope this helps,

Cheers Jerry
