Worth joining the MOA for advice. Just a few relatively minor) things that come up on Moodys of that era. Rusty looking keel bolts, mild steel fuel tanks, leaky windows, water damaged woodwork. Plus the usual evidence of 30+ years of often hard use and multiple owners' handiwork!

Thanks for the advice, I’ve briefly looked at the moody site. Definitely buyer beware with boats of this age

I would add babystay chainplate to the list given above, known weak point. Also you can have a bit of deck compression at the mast foot.
They seem like nice boats though. One generation on and a slight stretch from what we have.

Very rare to find structural problems. Shroud chain plates have failed on a few boats across the range because owners didn't renew the sealant where they pass through the deck and the ply pad bonded to hull they mount on had rotted away. Support pad in the bilge for the mast support post needs checking for compression, hardwood encased in grp. Keel studs don't fail but the nuts go rusty and when trying to remove, the studs draw complete with rusty nut. Easy DIY replacement, 24mm mild steel studs replaced usually with keel on. Check rudder tube for weep, may need seals replacing on some models, others have an adjustable stuffing box same as stern glands. Still no concerns about our 33 year old 376 which is very similar construction to 425.

No babystay on 425 or 422 unless retrofitted.
Agree with Graham376 ref sealing shroud plates, rebed mine every couple of years. Internal shroud mountings are well hidden without some serious carpentry, some owners now have inspection covers fitted!
Ditto the rest of Grahams points also.
Other thoughts; most will by now have had at least one major refit, mine had a recent new engine, rigging, sails, upholstery etc when bought in 2016, since added full networked electronics. Difficult to find a modern centre cockpit aft "island" bed cabin go anywhere cruiser for the money IMHO.
MOA membership is best value £20 you can spend if you are serious about any Moody.
