Im considering a Moody 425 as our next boat however we sail in Greece where a Bimini is esential. Does anyone have a 425 with a bimini? Im worried that there simply isnt engough headroom under the boom to fit one.

Is it possible to raise the boom? If so I guess that would also entail a little tailoring of the mainsail.

Thanks

Bimini yes or No

Hello Steve

As a Moody 422 owner (Greece and Turkey), we have come across exactly the same issue (notice we don't call it a problem).. there simply isn't the room under the boom, especially when close-hauled to fit a bimini. Even if we could and wanted to fold it back out of the way the main sheet is in the way. We don't want to fiddle with the main sail as it's fully battened and brilliant.

We have a brilliant boom tent though, it does the job better than any bimini while in harbour and we are about to try out a new-fangled idea involving a 1-metre length of plastic pipe strapped to the binnacle and a heavy-duty sun brolly. This should solve the hot, windless, downhill stretches.

Just spotted this post....hope this is not to late to help.

Yes we do have a Bimini on our 425. I am a tad over 6ft tall and wanted around 6 inches headroom to make the whole arrangement comfortable and practical especially when on the wheel and stood up. It also needed to be this height to permit easy ingress/egress from the cockpit to the side decks.

Originally the boom swept the cockpit at around 6ft 2in and that simply didn't leave enough headroom to meet my needs.

I cured the problem by taking two simple measures: -

1. I had the the mainsail recut (a minor job) to raise the boom a couple of inches and at the same time ...

2. had an integral block stitched into the clew of the mainsail and that gained a few more inches

When I was originally shopping round for a 422/425 I noticed that some others had managed to fit Biminis without any mods - and from this I am guessing that the height booms sweep the cockpit varies from boat to boat!

Hope this information helps
