I'm thinking about buying a Moody 42 centre cockpit c1979. It's old l know but the Primrose design has lasted well and there are few around. Are there owners out there or former owners with any comments on their performance/handling etc. We will be living onboard for a year so what are they like to live with?

Firstly, what's her name? There were 66 42's built 11-12 being centre cockpit. They are not going to win races and need a puff of wind to get going. However, when all of the modern 'go quicker' 'light' jobbies are calling it a day and reefing like mad F6-7++ you'll be sailing just fine!
Great live-a-board (been on board Junica for 12 years now).
Only word of advice is to double double check the deck area around the main mast and also the thrust post, for signs of movement. The bulkhead, going forward, has no integral strength and unless repairs have been already carried out it will require careful scrutiny. Please PM for further details. Otherwise if she is the right price then you will find no better for taking care of you in adverse conditions. The only downside is the cockpit, it's safe and deep and all things that you want for sailing, however it is not an 'entertaining' cockpit. Ours doubles as a shower room, drying area, garden room, porch, storage area. As well as a safe comfortable cockpit for 2 whilst sailing. Good luck and hope to meet up with you should you buy her.

Having bought a similar aged 36 for similar use you should be fine. I suggest making contact with the Moody Owners Association who have a good web site and their forum should also be able to give you advice etc if required.

Friend of mine has one. Bought it to do family sailing in, which they do a lot, most weekends from spring to autumn. Whilst he has done a tremendous amount in terms of refitting her, (he did get her cheap) he is “in the business” so knows what he is looking at and definitely wouldn’t buy something he would not be happy in a blow in.

Should be great as a live aboard. You would be going on acres not square feet.

Good luck.

I agree with the comment about weight/speed/wind. We have a Moody 471 built in Swanwick in 1984. She is very solid (also centre cockpit) weighing 23 tonnes and that's without our rubbish which probably adds two more. We are moored in Yasmine Hammamet marina in Tunisia and a couple of weeks ago sailed down the coast to El Kantoui for a few days. We returned in a F5-6 on the beam with a fair sized sea also on the beam. One reef in the main and half the geoa out. We did the 32.8 mile passage in 3hrs 45 mins. Not bad for an old lady eh?
