Moody 37\'s, what are they like?

I have at last chosen the boat I intend to cruise to and around the Caribbean, and the offer Richard and I have made on a Moody 37 has been accepted. Realising that this is not the best time to seek the expertise of the Forumites- (after we have made our choice and offer), but thinking that poor Ken may appreciate you lot having something else to think about than him replacing his decks, perhaps you could give me some idea of the heavy weather capability, the sailing ability, especially to windward and running down wind, and any peculiarities of the design, that I should be prepared for. This model is 1986 vintage, and was the following year expanded to the Moody 376 with just the addition of a sugar scoop on the stern, a Bill Dixon design like my '27', which, for me, has been excellent.

If you like and appreciate the 27, you will get on fine with the 37. The 376 was a marginally better boat, certainly in its later days but in handling and performance terms there is no real difference. She is, in my view, one of the better performing Moodys of that generation and the accommodation is excellent. Good luck with your venture

We looked long and hard at Moody 37's and 376's and the int that I got was that they do sail pretty well. Certainly much much better than some of the earlier Moody's. The main reason we didn't go for one in the end was that I'm 6'2" and the headroom in the Westerly Sealord we've bought is much better. I'm hoping not to much difference in the performance - but no data.

The aft cabin in the Moody is palatial with what appears to be reasonable ventilation (have you tried sailing in the tropics? - ventilation becomes high priority) The fit was reasonable. My understanding was that the only real difference between the 37 and the 376 was that the 376 had a sugar scoop added. Internally pretty much the same. Of course lack of a sugar scoop makes adding a wind vane steering gear a touch easier.

See you in the Carib?
