Moody 376 scheel keel

Thinking of buying a Moody 376. Saw one with a "scheel" keel which is 4'6" instead of standartd 5'6". Anyone able to comment on the impact this has on upwind performance and stability ? By the way are stability curves available for these yachts (asked Moody but no response).

Also, any general comments on the 376 welcome. I delivered one (standard keel) in Med a few years ago and was impressed by general comfort but less impressed by the ride upwind in steep seas. But I guess its all a compromise.

Nice boatg in lots of ways - one of their best - but you have already highlighted the big drawback. Moodys are not alone in this, though, by any means, nor are they the worst.


The Scheel keel (after Dutch Admiral Scheel) is a very efficient design much copied. Stability will probably not be affected much as you will be hard put to notice the difference in parformance. I haven't sailed a Moody 376 with one of these keels but the shape usually makes up for the loss of draught until you really start heeling when you might find a little extra leeway.

Have a good look at the boat when ashore. Shallow draft Moody's (amongst others)can find the foot of the rudder awfully close to the bottom - thus at more risk of grounding than standard boats. A broken rudder will definitely ruin your upwind performance!

My Compromis has a Scheel

I rate it very highly as shallow draft options go. The rudder point is well made as is the angle of heel. The problem with shallow draft keels, upwind tracking etc. is magnified by broad beams.
