Moody 346

Doing a bit of research for my dad currently looking for boats around this size. A big fan of the accomiodation on offer but unsure of the performance trade off. Any info appreciated regarding either keel type. Also what do owners plan passage time's at speed wise? thanks again

Try a PM (Private Message, under User Options) to "bignick" who's got one and recently given it a performance upgrade.

Try out a Gib'sea 106 Master version. You will find that these sail better and a bit faster as standard than the 346, are IMHO generally fitted better than the 346 and are about 60% of the price of a similarly fitted 346. Avoid the charter version like the plague unless you insist on having three separate double cabins.

i had one for 5 years, and now have a M38 - also has an M31 - so I spose I'm a bit of a Moody convert.

There is always a trade off with boats, and the 346 is no exception. It has first class accommodation and storage etc, particularly the aft cabin, and sleeps 6 comforably.... but you lose a bit on performmance. SWMBO thought it was very nice and was very happy sailing in most weathers.

It is a solid, well built boat and you feel very safe when the weather turns. They are usually fitted with a Thorneycroft 35 hp engine so plenty of power to get you out of trouble if necessary.

The bilge keel version does not go to windward that well so if you are keen look for a fin keel - 5 ft 6 inches so quite deep. Mine also had a furling main which didn't help performance, but i fitted a vertical battened furling main which made a big difference.

I had a moody 346 bilge keel and it was a perfectly adequate performer to windward, not noticably different to the fin, very good in heavy weather, accomodation good but aft berth a little narrow for 2 ( about 6 inches too narrow for my comfort )we only weigh 13st me and 9st her

we are now in the third season of our 346 and are really happy with her. I had sailed on my boss's boat several times before, which is the main reason we bought one. They are an excellent all rounder in terms of

- accommodation
- performance
- quality
- ability to handle the weather.

We have recently removed the behind-the-mast furling system, and bought a slab reefed mainsail system along with new genoa.
