Moody 333 any opinions on this boat - good or bad

Our Kelt 850 is now for sale as we will be buying a Moody 333 later on in the year. The boat we are looking at has a slight deformation of the deck where the mast sits and slight cracking in the area of the deck where the baby stay is attatched - nothing to put us off buying the boat but I am interested in whether these are known problems on the 333 or not. Any other opinions on the 333?

Why don't you post this on the MOA website? I've a Moody 33 which I believe is the earlier model. On my M33, for your info, the bulkhead where the babystay is bolted to had rotted as water had leaked thro' the deck at that point. I had to strip out the interior, cut out the rotten ply, insert a new piece of ply with epoxy, added a strengthening plate to spread the load over the bulkhead and reinstated everything. Not difficult to do, it took about a day but would be expensive if a boatyard did it.
I'll post the tel no of the Moody 333 'expert' tomorrow who you can call and talk abourt it.

You will find that the babystay on Moody 333 and similar sized Moodys have a known problem.

There is insufficient strenthening at the attachment point aft of the forward hatch.

I discussed this with my surveyor when I purchased my 346. He had pointed it out as a known weakness, but said I didn't have a problem yet but (a) keep an eye on it and (b) dont over tighten the babystay.

The solution is to remove the headlining in the forward cabin (easy) and insert a bigger backing plate - preferably s/s sheet - with the babystay chainplate going through this. This will correct any deformation.

Wouldn't put me off purchase of a boat though.

Ironic isn't it. If something similar is found on a Ben or Bav, the whole marque is condemmed. It happens on a Moody or Westerley and it almost becomes a loveable quirk

To be honest if I tightened the babystay on my previous boat it lifted the headlining an inch and made the door impossible to close. It resolved itself every close season when the mast went down ;-)

It was a Jeanneau and I didn't worry too much (OK a wee bit when beating hard...)

I'll check with the webmaster, I know he is fitting a holding tank at the moment!

Tarka1 - I am the webmaster of the MOA and cannot find your registration. There were 2 applications, Joe O'Connor and Lyndon Williams. No Tarka1 anywhere, but then that is the problem with this sort of forum, nobody knows who anyone is!

Anyhow if you want to register, send me an email, you can get my address by looking at the contacts area of the MOA website www.moodyowners.org.uk and I will sort you out in a trice!

Kind regards
Neil Eccles
