I'm going to look at a Moody 33 on Saturday. Any advice on what I should look for on this model specifically? It's a fin keel with a Thorneycroft T90 engine. If it looks OK and negotiations go well I would have it surveyed but pointers from people who know the boat would be welcome.

Hi there

amongst the items often overlooked is the Sump on the Thornycroft, if it is the pressed steel sump as many are, they suffer from rust enough to cause oil leakage close to the lower corners and occasional unexpected replacement. Look for surface corrosion as the metal is not very thick and pitting can go quite deep.

You can ask on the Moody Owners website - you do not have to be a member to post if you look at the 'Thinking of buying a Moody' forum:

Basically they very good boats and surprisingly quick, but could well need a re-engine if not done already, plus usual things to look for in a boat of that age.

Lots of advice on the Thornycroft in the next issue of the magazine.

Looked at several of these a few years ago. Loads of space, but rather odd layout which makes it feel a bit cramped. Woodwork and finish is poor by later standards - lots of formica type woodwork.

Potential negatives, apart from the old engine are osmosis (probably sorted by now on most), poor electrics, failure of engine exhaust mixer, steering mechanism suffering from water leaks on joints plus all the usual problems of a 30 year old boat - droopy headlinings, leaking windows, obsolete equipment etc. However many have been updated so these things vary from boat to boat.

When we were looking, we decided if we were going that route it was better to spend the bit extra and go for a MK 2 a vastly better boat in my view.

Good luck with your search

Sit on the cushions. We found the berth seats very narrow for comfort for any length of time . ........ and no we are not "lardy" arses .
