Moody 31 Mk2 v Beneteau 35s5 v ?

Prices seems to have changed little since we bought ours before the credit crunch, perhaps buyers value quality over age. What is interesting is the value of the M31 and Beneteau 35s5 Paul has looked at. There is about 20% difference in price, but the Beneteau is a decade younger. Some have said the Beneteau is bigger, yes with a tape measure on the outside, then I looked at the photos. You could have a dinner party for 6 on the swim platform, great for dangling your toes in the water in the med, but Scotland? waste of the overall length. Nor does the main cabin look much bigger, so the usable space may not be as big as a comparison with some other 35ft yachts. It probably comes down to the condition and age of big ticket items like engines and sails plus the finish inside which isn't great on the particular Beneteau hence his other post about engines.

The beneteau was actually only 2 years younger. It was a bit more tired than the Moody, a bit more money (£5k) and as an ex charter boat....it had the 3 cabin layout, which probably is good for some, but I preferred the forward facing chart table and larger head that the Moody and 2 cabin versions of the beneteau have.

I ended up getting the Moody at a real good price.

There's a ton of electronics on the Moody, full cockpit canvas, in mast furling (which I may regret down the line) but no heat or hot water. Both things that can be added easily.

LOL, on the swim platform...it's quite a size.

When I was looking at boats, a sugar scoop/ swim platform was pretty high up on the list of must haves, as keeping the boat on a swing mooring and mainly anchoring, we find the sugar scoop invaluable.

I sail on the west coast of Scotland and won't be without it! :)

Oh I agree and the M31 Mk2 has one, but just look at the one one on the 35s5. Bit excessive surely but then probably designed for the med.

Moody 31s are on average round x3 times the cost of my Griffon and for an extra 4 foot, I'm not sure they're worth it until the prices fall sub £20,000.

A Moody 31 Mk2 BK will definitely be my next boat though. Or maybe a Fulmar, not sure yet!

Upgrading from a Pegasus 700 to a larger boat. Leaning towards a really nice Moody 31, but I am torn between that and a similar aged...but perhaps a little more tired Beneteau First 35s5.

Going to make my final decision next week.

If anyone on here is selling a ~1990's 30ish foot boat, send me a pm.
Depends on how and where you sail. Both are good boats, I have sailed both, IMO the Benn is a better boat and probably even better built. It is a lighter design than the Moody. If u was mucking around the solent I choose the Benny if I was an sailing around the west of Scotland then maybe the Moody.
