My Moody29 is fitted with a 2 bladed prop which I notice has a slight chip in one corner. The boat sailed well with this prop but it didnt seem to provide a lot of thrust against wind and tide(I was barely able to make headway against wind and tide in a F6 even motorsailing on one occasion at the end of last season). The prop was barnacled up when I lifted her out so that was obviously reducing prop efficiency as well.
As I use the boat for cruising I would like to replace the prop with something that will provide a little more efficiency when required, although I would prefer not to lose too much sailing performance.
I was thinking of a 3 bladed prop with a slightly larger diameter, any recommendations?
I dont really want to go to the expense and extra complication of a folding or feathering prop (in line with my keep it simple and cheap philosophy).
Thanks

You need to scope your engine/displacement to ensure a new prop is right for the output. A prop supplier will do this for you over the phone. You might be advised to stay with the same diameter of prop otherwise the blades may come too close to the hull.

3 blades is more efficient - it gives you more "disc" ie more thrust. I guess you will find 3 blades alone will achieve your aims - it's what I had to do with my former Fulmar.

Barnacles etc on the prop easily take a knt off performance, and this will happen with a new prop too, if not kept clear.

I've a Moody 29 with 3 bladed fixed prop coupled to a Bukh DV20. Will happily cruise 5 - 6 knots and seems well matched overall. I've got the dimensions, pitch and supplier onboard and will pop down to the boat in the next couple of days if you want those details.

Thanks for the replies, I woud be gratefull for those details from moody madness, I also have a Buch20hp so if yours is a good match then it should work for me. Merry Christmas. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
