Given the choice between a Monterey 250 CR with a Yanmar Diesel and a Sea Ray 275 Sundancer with a 350 Mag Petrol engine which would you choose?

I’ve been offered deals on both to PX my Sea Ray cuddy that is too small to sleep on with any degree of comfort.

Is there anything else in this sector I should be looking at? I prefer the PX route, as I can’t be bothered with selling the boat. I just want the extra space with the least aggravation.

All comments much appreciated.

As regards to other boats, the Bayliner 285 is a peach. i loved mine, and they come with diesel power for similar money to the montey.

Well built now and tonnes of space with a very decent sea hull. I cant find it now, but I have a piccie of mine literally flying and we never noticed the landing.

Thanks for your replies. Both boats are 2005. The Yanmar is the 240 hp version.

I've just found my copy of the group test in the January 2006 MBM, the Four Winns Vista 258 won that, the Monterey came second.

One think I forgot to mention, the Sea Ray deal is an extra 15K !!

Got to be the monterey! It is a great layout, good quality good looking boat. They also seem well sorted to the Yanmar Diesels. I think Rubberduck had a Monterey 250 which he had a steyr diesel put in?

The Searay 275 just seems a compromise boat, not big, not small...an inbetweeny boat!

Cheers

Paul

I'd plum for the Monterey - but just check that the outdrive on the Yanmar is not a Bravo 3 drive. This combination led to problems the torque genereated when the turbo kicks in on the Yanmar can "wind" the Bravo 3 up. When the turbo on the Yanmar kicks in around 2.2 it kicks like a mule. Nothing subtle about it!

Thank you all for your comments. I've been reading old copies of MBM today, found a very interesting owner's report on a Chaparral in the June'07 issue - nice boat Gary !

I have the first 250 brought into the uk, which won the MBM back to back and two years later came second still in it's original layout. Fitted with the Yanmar. The 275 is a rebadged 250 to reflect the legth of the boat. I nominated the importers Southwater Marine, for the MBM aftersales award at the London boat show and they won!!!!
It is actually up for sale ONLY because we do not use her. Comes with 3.5 ton Bramber Trailer, Honda 27ie dingy, 2.3 hp outboard and everthging to go. We towed her to Alicante 2 years ago. Lying Brixham. PM if interested.

As Jez said, I've got a 2006 250 Cr with the D4 260 have to say its a great combination and so far even covered in weed and loaded up with dingy, fuel, beer, people etc she'll still crack 30kt's /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ok so clean and light you could be doing nearer 40 but you miss al the scenery that way and don't have beer when you get to wherever it is you were in such a rush to get to!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously though its a great boat, our last proper trip was from Solent to CI which she handled without fault!

One thing that isn't always obvious is its actually bigger than 25ft the official length is just shy of 28ft so bear that in mind when comparing with other boats!

Whatever you decide I would strongly advise diesel, your at a size where you'll want to do some cruising and the petrol would always worry me on range and to some extent availability

As already mentioned ours may be for sale soon so if you've got questions about the brand/boat or may be interested in mine drop me a PM

Cheers

mines for sale now !

I've seen it on the move and it flies - no wonder with 260Hp. I didnt know they did the D4 option, must be nice with all the electrinics that comes with

Chas25's boat is in superb condition and they really look after it. Would be a good buy for someone if he is going to sell it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm a big fan of the Sea Ray brand, I'm on my second, but IMHO the 275 is not their best work, it is too narrow for the length and height, rolls and gets blown about a fair bit and is not the best handling thing on the water, however i'm sure others will have their own opinions.

The other stuff in their range might be worth a look.

Mike,

Can't agree, but I do own one I suppose.
It did win one MBM back to back against a Larson and Crown. Two years later came second to the latest 4 Winns. One of the best points on both tests was the handling.
