Hi all
I sea tested a Monterey 265 yanmar 315hp - great boat - but wanted to get an idea of cruising speed and top speed, as she did seem a little slower than I expected ... Im after a cruiser so not worried about the speed but want to know is she performing as she should? Also how long to get up onto the plane , in calm conditions ...

I owned a smaller petrol before, so just wanted some advice as my first foray into diesel !

Thanks !

I have bumped this up, as first posts tend to hang around before they get posted.

So welcome to the forum. I don't know this boat, but it sounds like a lot of engine for a smallish sports cruiser, so I would expect it to fly. Generally US boats of this size have a 5.0 or 5.7 V8 petrol, with 250 to 270 ish up, but the Diesel should also have a lot more torque which should heave it up on the plane very smartly.

Others who know these things better than me should be along later, possibly this evening.

I'd agree with that.

I had a Rinker 260V with a 5.7 240hp petrol in and that got onto the plane very quickly (but then, no turbo lag) and hit 40mph on flat water - I'd expect that combo to do exactly the same or better - perhaps turbo lag is an issue?

Yeh this boat should fly I have a rinker 270 (out of water at the moment) however that has a 230hp Yanamar diesel and does 28 knots and get on the plane very quickly boat weighs about 3.5 ton

Wow - some really conflicting information out there online from various dealers adverts I have been looking at today etc - says top speed around 28 and cruising 22 knots. Does that seem about right ?

From the www ... Fitted with a Yanmar 315Hp Diesel the boat is exceptionally economical and offers a cruising speed of between 20-25Knots

As a comparison from a US site ...

•Tested power is 1 x 420-hp Volvo Penta 8.1GXi gas sterndrive.
•Top speed for the Monterey 265 Cruiser is 46.9 mph (75.5 kph), burning 34.9 gallons per hour (gph) or 132.1 liters per hour (lph).
•Best cruise for the Monterey 265 Cruiser is 24.2 mph (38.9 kph), and the boat gets 2.14 miles per gallon (mpg) or 0.91 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 172 miles (276.81 kilometers).

Sorry, I haven't a clue to the answers but I'm sure the man who will is Tom of Tompa Marine AKA Mercuryman on the forum.

He used to work for the Monterey main dealers for years, so will know them inside out!

I had a Monterey 250cr (which is the same as a 275cr) fitted with a Yanmar 4LHA 240hp diesel engine. I cruised at 20-22knots and it had a 30 knot top speed according to the GPS.

I'd suggest that you should cruise at about the same figures (maybe a couple of knots higher) but you'll be able to get on the plane much easier which was a bit a struggle on mine when fully loaded (lots of trim tab required).

I loved the engine in mine. It seemed to sip fuel rather than guzzle it like a V8. Poole to Yarmouth and back was between £60 to £80 depending on sea state whereas some of the v8 engined boats of similar size were doing £150-£200 at Marina fuel prices (£1.14 for diesel vs £1.75 for petrol - it was an expensive Marina!!)

Rhino Mac. I decided to get one of those boats that I was talking to you about, I in the end, decided on the Rinker not your old boat. The rinker just felt a bit more roomy

Hi Lionelz. Glad to hear you got a boat you're pleased with. I saw the broker selling my old one at Poole Boat Show and he said the chap who owned my old Monterey had decided to keep it. I guess it's back down the Iford river now.

Hope you're enjoying your new boat. I've been having a go at yacht racing in the harbour to get my boaty fix but I think a motorboat bests suits my family so I hope gone back on the market looking in he next year or so.

Mine out of water at moment as I hit a submerged object, its been out for over 2 months now awaiting for the money from the insurance company. But hopefully it will be back in in the next few weeks, just in time for the good weather
