No, of course not, but if the incident off Start point had involved a multihull, how long would it have been before the 'all multihulls unsafe' posts started?

No, but its the reason we have a bilge keeler!!!!!!

That way we always have one spare incase one drops off!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It's perfectly acceptable to raise the topic, and I think in general the sailing ,and these forums in particular, are very good at recognising the need to discuss all accidents in a sensible way to ensure that lessons are learnt. However I don't think this thread was started with that aim, but to score points over mono sailors in a wonderfully divisive way.

I can see why you might feel this way but I'll also say that the point made by SL is valid - if it had been a multi there would have been a lot of the posts he has suggested flying around.

I'll also say that I know SL pretty well and I can promise that he is not in the habit of taking "cheap shots". He may be misguided (he sails a cat), but I believe his point is fair.

Cheers,

Colin

I agree SL normally seems like a stand up sort of guy in his posts (if a little obsessed with cats!), but can't help feeling he's a little wide of the mark on this one. Just because some people would have made that sort of comment is no reason to stoop to that level.

What a totally insensitive bar steward you are to even suggest that as multihulls don't have big lumps of iron screwed ineffectually to their bottoms to keep them upright they don't sink or turn upside down when it falls off!!!!
The next thing you will be suggesting is that if you are going to have a keel it should be attached to the boat properly. Total rubbish!!!!
After all we all know that designers of boats all have safety and integrity of design at the top of their minds when producing boats don't we? It's got absolutely nothing at all to do with making more profits by producing boats that are potential death traps at the cheapest possible price does it?
It is indeed very sad that people have to die to bring the point home but it is even sadder if they die in vain and no one heeds the warnings....

So it does affect the steering on a Bav, presume since they could not go to starboard they had to increase the turns each time until they reached land?

Oh yes they are - lifting keel with the ballast in the hull is the way to go.

And no it's not insensitive - there's too much "take offencery" around as it is without it sneaking in here. I thought that there was a bit more perspective and grown up thinking on Scuttlebutt.
By the way, just reading a history of the Sudanese campaigns in the 1880's - General Gordon and all that - did you know that the Sudanese were still slave trading as late as that and the Brits were in Egypt and the Sudan partly to stamp out this trade? Now I think the Sudan should apologise and Britain should be thanked for its efforts.

People can put that in their PC pipes and choke on it.
