I know that some of you are appalled at the waste and silliness of government, while others just love the rod of granny state and its tax and licence fee gatherers on their backs. Perhaps the following from the New Zealand media on the NZ Inland Revenue Department (our tax gatherer) will tickle the fancies of both.

An Inland Revenue manager dresses in a fairy costume, complete with wings and a tiara, and makes her staff put pictures of monkeys on their desks until they improve their performance.

Inland Revenue confirmed that there was a team leader who "chooses to wear fairy wings some days".

"It is just the way that she expresses her dress sense" a spokeswoman said.

The department denied that the monkey pictures were a punishment, and described them as one of the "innovative ways" used by managers to understand staff concerns."

So, now I know why I feel as though I am being made a monkey of and a bit like the tooth fairy when I pay my taxes.
