A light hearted post for a change as the regulars on this forum live and cruise far & wide I wonder.......has anyone come across anyone having the "traditional sailors of old" pet ...the Monkey....this was as a result of a telephone conversation with my daughter who said "If your off to Carib you'll have to get a Parrot and a monkey"..Yeah right....

Well, yes. It wasn't a monkey, acutally - it didn't have a tail. When we were in Thailand/Malaysia for a season during 1998-9 there was an American yacht with this creature on board - I can't remember the full story, but I seem to remember that they had actually done the "humanitarian" thing by taking the animal on board. It was an orphan or something that they had rescued/adopted. We have some photos somewhere of it halfway up their mast in Georgetown, Penang, trying to catch the black birds that were "buzzing" it.

The "owners" were arranging to leave the animal at the gibbon sanctuary in Phuket, before making their way onward to South Africa.

We have met a boat in Panama with a pet sloth onboard! the perfect pet as it hangs in the rigging all day, craps once a week, dosn't moult and slepps with a teddy below decks! The couple who have this pet can be seen wandering round with it slung around their neck like a baby carrier!

There is also the 5 F's rule: Find her, Follow her, Finger her, [--word removed--] her, Forget her.

Never mind the caribbean. The only time I ever saw a parrot on a boat was on a swedish boat int he middle of the Caledonian canal!

Met this fella in the Grenada rainforest last week. Handsome Mona monkey. He was savvy enough to know how to unwrap a peppermint we offered. But was unmoved by SWMBO's offer to sign on as crew.

I was in Ustka, Poland, last September, tied up the quayside, and behind me was a large German boat. The skipper did seen to have a few problems, like drink, and being an attention seeker. He did have a pet monkey on board, and, I think, had it for the attention he got as a consequence.

One of the attractions of the place was that mooring was free!

And if you want to see more of it: Ustka.

On a Dutch liveaboard boat in Portimao, Algarve, we saw a parrot - also several budgies, two cats and a dog. Didn't see a monkey but that doesn't mean there wasn't one there!
