I gather taht one should use monel pop rivets. However, wht is the problem with using aluminium rivets when fixing to an aluminum spar?

Also, what happens to the (presumably steel) pin? Obviusly the end breaks off and falls iretrievaly into the spar, where presualy it ralltes around. Alternatively, it might stay stuck in the rivet, in contact with either monel or aluminium.

Also, what is wrong with using sealant udner the head to insulte the rivert, or make it waterproof, or whatever?

Sorry, but I am nto well versed in these matters.

Aluminum ones are not so strong. When popping a large monel one, they go with a hellava bang, usually resulting in the inexperienced popper (like me) falling over backwards with a startled bunny expression. Not to be done up masts without care.

You can poke the metal bit through and stick in a bit of plastic. If you can't get it out, it rattles around forever, but you can sometimes get bits out of masts and booms.

You can use Zinc Chromate paste on rivets and metal fittings fitted onto aluminum alloy to help reduce corrosion. It's a yellow goo that comes in toothpaste sized tubes. Get it from riggers or some chandlers, Duralac is one (the only?) brand.

If you need to seal the pop, then use sealed pop rivets. These are like a top hat before you pop them. Always put goo around rivets you need to seal. Also, despite what the manufacturers say, sealed pops often split when done up, so it's a good idea to put a bit of goo in the little hole in the middle. The ratio of split ones to sealed ones seems to be about 1 in 10 at the factory where I work - we pressure test to 1/4 psi to check and can hear the split ones merrily hissing away at this pressure.

G'day trays,

Monel is used for extra strength, an anti corrosive coating should be added to all fittings on mast or boom (or any aluminium item for that matter).

When purchasing ask for "Blind Rivets", they retain the pull thru, so no bits dropping into inaccessible spaces and a dab of sealant will ensure no leaks.

I Hope this helps.....

PS I'm located close to the Whitsunday's, where are you in Oz?

As the others have said - monel is used for strength. You will need a powerfull rivet gun, as you will find it almost impossible to pop the rivets with a small one.

I note some people have said - leave the broken off bit in the rivet, however if you ever want to drill out a rivet and that little bit is corroded in their - it it so hard that you cannot drill it, so make sure you knock them out.

You must use Duraflex to insulate stainless fittings, however if you are adding large flat fittings the usual practice is to use insulating tape.

Have fun

In industrial quantities, yes.

For lesser quantities, I've not seen a supplier of sealed monel rivets, sorry. The answer would be to use a bigger sealed aluminium pop (2 sizes bigger), or a CherryMax rivet. Unfortunately CherryMax rivets require a special gun and are aimed at aerospace use - so cost EVEN more than bits with 'Marine' in their title. They are VERY strong though - around the strength of an equivalent size solid rivet.

If I can find a supplier I'll post it as a reply to this note within the next 24 hours.

At least four lengths of 4mm dia sealed dome headed monel pop rivets are available mail order in the UK. They are available in multiples of 100 from:-

http://www.rivetwise.co.uk

Use the search facility to identify the rivet head shape, diameter and material, then check the grip length for the one you want. The monel ones are called 'Copper-Nickle', so don't say there are no Monel ones there!

rivetwise.co.uk also do SS as well as aluminium and steel rivets mail order.

Thanks for the advice and info.

I don't like the idea of falling overboard with a bang. I don't swim too well.
