"Mollie Louise" - Fatality

Re: \"Mollie Louise\" - Fatality

Does anyone know anything about them?

We sailed back from IJmuiden on Tuesday/Wednesday, and there were a few British boats debating whether better weather was likely later in the week there then. I am not sure whether Mollie Louise was among them - the name rings a bell, though, and the tragedy is a bit too close.

All sympathy to the crew and friends.

Re: \"Mollie Louise\" - Fatality

Both sobering reports ... while it is always a very basic error to not be wearing a life jacket in such conditions (as the one fellow was reported) ... it is just as basic not to be hanked on ... every one, pundit to pro, talks about life jackets, and rightly so, but IMO, the primary safety device is the harness, either hanked on if in the cockpit or attached to the jackstay if working on deck; after all, the primary directive is to STAY IN THE BOAT! The harness is all too often regarded as secondary to the jacket and I say neglect of the importance of the harness is wrong.

Re: \"Mollie Louise\" - Fatality

I add my sympathies to the family of the fatality, but also my congratulations to the rescue services and the injured crew member who apparently continued to send MAYDAYS until picked up by the mayday relay vessel. If it were he who was not wearing a lifejacket it might be understandable. If down below when the knockdown occurred he might not have had his on, and if then suffering a broken wrist or arm, might not have been then able to put one on. No doubt he MCA report will provide guidance for us all following these harrowing circumstances.

Re: \"Mollie Louise\" - Fatality

Deepest sympathies - and also praise to the rescue services. It must have been no mean feat finding the lost crew in the water and the tragedy could have been so much worse.

Re: \"Mollie Louise\" - Fatality

Thanks Robin I was being sarcastic as no mention of a

knockdown in the report

on another point I'm almost certain they did not go in

the 'oggin of their own will

IMHO hindsight is great

"judge those as you would want to be judged"

cheers Joe

Very true but it was their decision not to use harnesses.

I was there

Hi All,

Whilst researching something unrelated Google showed this thread - which i have read with interest. I was aboard the Mollie Louise, it was my fathers' yacht. Other crew members were Dan (next door neighbour) and a very good family friend Adrian Piggford. As a trio thay had been enjoying a trip to Holland from Grimsby, i joined in Holland where we enjoyed a week of glorious sailing and great weather to sail back to Grimsby. It was sadly Adrian who lost his life, whilst i must add, wearing a lifejacket. I can also confirm that we DID suffer a knockdown which is how three of us ended up in the water.

Channel 5 made a programme of the rescue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb-G9jhRS1o&feature=related
The RNLI documented the rescue too:

I ran the Great North Run in 2009 and raised £1,500 for the RNLI and am running the same race this year and the London Marathon in 2011, if you would sponsor me for such a worthy cause please use this link:

If you know my dad, or think you met us in Holland you can contact him through me on this thread.

Thanks

Dave Barton
