Molesey Regatta Juniors - Sunday 15th July Cancelled

Handbrake turns!

What's the nautical equivalent? Drop an anchor?

'Hold her up bow side/stroke side' - meaning for that side to dig their oars into the water and hold them steady, possibly pushing back a little to help, while the non-stopped side carry on rowing to turn the boat - not quite on a sixpence, but as near as!

Says to me then they weren't starting the exercise far enough above the weir/bridge/obstruction to allow themselves enough time to complete the exercise before they were swept into the obstruction. An experienced crew wouldn't have a problem, but I appreciate these were juniors and that you were there, I wasn't, but I was just answering the query about the rowing equivalent of a handbrake turn! Cheers! :):)

Ah ha - now I'm guessing here, that it is a downstream course, they approach the stake boat, get swept past it and then have to try and back up to, it as well as moving a bit sideways, and ..... oops! Nothing to do with handbrake turns! Hope all was well - sounds like it. :)

Yes that's it! Coxed it myself, last year, in calmer times.
This year, however, several couldn't hack it, so the umpires aborted some attempts and after lining crews up against each other, let them go off, on a 'free' start.:)
