Mojitos are very boaty cocktails as they containrum, and my friend mentioned in another thread urgently needs to perfect his recipe in anticipation of crew arrivals.

I have made these once or twice thus:
lot of fresh mint, whacked to release mintiness
a whole lime, squeezed and sliced
at least two shots dark rum
some sugar syrup
possibly angostura bitters
almost certainly some more rum
ice
a bit of soda water

Are there any experts who can advise/improve on this?

Maybe some more rum?

The classic rum punch recipe in the Windies is a song :

"One of sour,
Two of sweet,
Three of strong
And four of weak"

The sour is the lime juice, sweet is sugar syrup (preferably made with dark brown sugar), three is the rum, and four is simple water.
Three and four can be swopped round if desired.....

In addition you can add grated nutmeg and Angostura bitters, if desired. Mint leaves sound good as well.

Oh, and if in doubt, do as advised above, and add more rum......

I took notes from the barman at la bodeguita del medio in Habana, about 15yrs ago, don't know if it has been invented there but they may have a clue anyway...

half a teaspoonful of sugar, 1/4oz lemon juice, add a bit of soda water and stir.

Add yerbabuena (latin name is Mentha Piperita so I guess it is peppermint) to fill about 1/3 of the glass (before being crushed), and crush the stems, trying to touch the leaves as little as possible

Add ice cubes, and 1.5oz of white rum; fill the glass with more soda water and serve

enjoy

YES, that is right recipe. Whole Cuba drink on that way.
But when I came back from Cuba my blood sugar was same as in Mojito!
