Abroad last weekend, we chartered two sailing boats. Top-sailed gaff-rigged self-tacking sloops I think would be the correct description. Not at all easy to handle, I must say. Bit windy, and we broached five times in the first few minutes. Then the keel fell off one and the bowsprit snapped on another! So we went back to get replacements. I hope this will be useful info for anyone else planning the same adventure. The offending charter company was that bloke with a trolley-load of sailing boats next to the ornamental lake in Jardin de Luxembourg, in Paris.

Repacements?? Surprised you got your deposit back! Obviously grounded one at speed and I bet the busted Bowsprit was the result of a disgruntled Swan that you prodded up the chuf? Anyway did you produce the correct paperwork for inland lakes?

eek, paperwork. Fortunately it was under 7metres (by 6.7 metres) and under 6 hp (by 6 horsepower) so i think was clear there. Agreed though- it would have been better to launch underarm.

Re: There\'s a nice..

Canadian keel to be had. Might take a couple of dives though - it's 16 miles North of Cherbourg.

Re: that big ...

We "scarpered" actually, much more historically accurate i believe. Interestingly though, i did return to the car and found that i had slightly blockaded several other french vehicles, which i may let past sometime next year, or the year after that.
