Some months ago there was a thread discussing a model yacht that goes for around £150 and seemed to be a good deal.

I recall that someone was using his in a Dutch Marina when some others came out to play.

I have beaten the search engine to death today but cannot find the thread.

Does anyone have the details of said model yacht.

Cheers

I don't know about this particular one but 2 years back I bought a 1 meter class racing boat joined a local club.

Great fun.. I actually found that my knowledge of 'big' sailing plus a bit of previous with model aircraft helped me get straight off and racing fairly compeditivly..

Unfortunately not enough time to spare so sold it all up but with regret.

Model Yachting

If you want to get into model yachting, to race a class boat competitively, rather than buying a cheap toy boat to sail in a pond, check out the Model Yacht Association website and find your local club contact the secretary, and find out where they sail.

It's far more fun racing other people rather than sailing about on your own. You learn more and it's more social. And like someone else said what you learn on radio controlled racing boats can be translated to big boat sailing, things like sail trim and sail shape are the small things that makes yachts sail faster whatever their size

Go along to your local club and see what they are sailing will more or less deciced the class of boat that you race. It will also get you hooked once and for all!!! You'll probably find the IOM (International one metre) as is one of the most popular classes, it's also one of the most fun, competitive and easiest to get into. It's the class I started with. I built the hull in my kitchen, from balsa wood and epoxy, for £30 (for materials, the plans were free, and it's here with me in the lounge (no mooring fees you see!) the RC gear and rig will cost about £150 depending on how handy you are, and if you want carbon fibre appendages and good sails it will cost you more...but it's also possible to buy a second hand boat for £150 all inc so it's far from the cost of big boats!

When I was starting out I couldn't find any beginners info on the net, so when I joined my local club, I started work putting a website together which contains information that might be helpful to anyone from the passer by at the pond to the experienced sailor interested in a new way to spend money.

Here the site I put together for the Clapham Model Yacht club:

If you don't want to spend too much , and just want to fun sail from your big boat the micromagic is one of the better kits that fits onboard and I know there are some boatowners that will get these out in the marinas as the sun goes down

If anyone wants any more info about radio sailing PM me /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi,

In Holland there was a hype with modelsailing the past few years, and serious racing was (is ) involved.
Check out http://www.micromagic.nl/

The model you've seen in the harbour probably was a MicroMagic. Small and really fun to sail. In my family we have 2.

Thanks for all the replies folks. It was the Micro Magic that I was after.

A nice small boat that is easy to stow.

Welcome to the forums Noray38. Thanks for registering just to give me this info. Much appreciated.

I see you sail out of Gosport, Next time your down that way, I highly recommend that you contact

Derek Morland of Yachting Sports.

He has been racing model yachts for many years and has national and international achievements to his credit. He is a well known character, He was also on 'Trophy' in the '79 Fastnet! And he may even still be the Commodore at Warsash Sailing Club.

Best of luck.

The UK Micro Magic Class Association was formed back in November 2006 with it's home at www.sailuk.org

Essentially started by full size sailors - for full size sailors, the Class is starting to take off in a big way in the UK, whilst in Holland there are over 1900 boats mainly raced by big boat sailors during the "off season"

Many, if not most of our Sailing and Yacht Clubs are very quiet between November and April each year and the Micro Magic ideas was so we could continue sailing / racing / having fun and keeping the bar open during the winter.

Sailing Clubs like Southwold SC have taken on the idea.
Organising Beer & Build nights at the Club so they can build the boats together over a pint and a laugh or two.

The result is a fleet of 9 MKII Micro Magics at Southwold SC being sailed by young and old thoughout the winter.

This looks very much like an updated version of the Tactic (same hull shape, v. similar rig, different deck moulding) which used to be produced by Graham Bantock's company - is it? We race them on our local lake (Brightlingsea) during Jan/Feb/Mar when there is no dinghy racing.
