Was the Wight viz forecast Thursday

The fog patch lasted from Northney to Cherbourg and needed 3 course alterations in the shipping lanes. Came through the Outer Rade East entrance without seeing either side and whilst trying to avoid 2 french bavarias.

Not the time to be learning how to use radar! This shot taken as we were going through the entrance

Your lucky it was only 2 Bavs, 4 weeks ago in similar viz it was Barfleur in the same place. Had spotted her on radar and hoped she we would use the West entrance. However, when it was obvious she was turning for the East entrance we stopped and kept out of the way. We had worse viz, 30m or less the next day round Cap de la Hague and the same again the following day off the N. Brittany Coast when the viz went from 7 miles to <30m in 2 minutes.

Surely if the viz forecast includes fog patches, it should read mod or good but poor in fog patches as fog and moderate or good viz are not compatable?

I did a trip like that to Cherbourg once without radar (no fog forecast). I was a gibbering wreck by the time we got there. Never again!

I've done it a good few times without radar many moons ago when the risk seemed exciting. Not for me these days though- the memory of the sound of close engines and the wake from unseen close contacts makes me shiver. Think I've used my 9 lives in that department.

Sign of our age John. MrsTome remarked on what a lovely crossing it was on the way over...

I was grateful that there were no signs of big ship movements in the entrance and hoping that the outer wall wasn't masking them! There were several targets converging on the entrance, but the bavs were the only ones close enough to see.

I don't think that poor and fog are compatable either. Don't they both refer to different visibilities (poor 1km to 3km, fog less than 1km?)

Personally I do'nt find Russian roulette exciting in a stimulating sort of way, it just scares the [--word removed--] out me!!
