Ok, for someone new to boating I'm interested to guage opinion in order to asses the various makes of mobo in terms of their comparison to car brands. For instance, is Broom likened to a volvo or a Mercedes? Is Sunseeker more BMW than Alpha? What do people think of say their top several mobo makes? Apologies if this has been covered before.

I would say a Bayliner is more akin to a Skoda. Really bad past reputation but current product is much improved thanks to the partnership with other brands (Skoda=VW, Audi, SEAT and Bayliner=SeaRay, Maxum, Sealine)

I think it may also be somewhat towards the actual models that have been released by the manufacturer as some models have a not so good reputation and others are really good for reliability quality etc.

Also, many parts of the boat are not actually made by the brand, which can affect the perception of the model, such as the engines!

Some Volvo models have a not so good reputation and therefore affect the host boats perception of reliability and quality!

Some of the older boats built by Princess for instance are extremely well built such as the Princess 435, but as the market is more competitive nowadays, Princess couldn't afford to spend the time and effort to build a range like that again!

Just IMHO anyway! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sunseeker - Porsche
Broom - Volvo (Driver with pork pie hat, and box of Kleenex on parcel shelf /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
Bayliner - Ford
Sealine - Skoda
Princess - Saab
Fairline - BMW
Windy - VW (as in Golf GTi, rather than 1.8 Passat /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)
Nimbus - Merc

All in my humble and completely subjective opinion.

I think sunseeker is more like your Aston.
Fairline/Princess = BMW/Merc
Azimut = Alfa
Ferretti = Bentley GT
Windy = Audi
Sealine = Ford/vauxall
Absolute/Cranchi/Sessa/Gobbi/... Renault/Citroen/peugeot

OK then, for a bit of fun:

Fairline - BMW
Princess - Audi
Sealine - Jaguar
Sunseeker - Range Rover with blacked out windows, 22" rims, and chrome tail pipes.

Sunseeker = Range Rover 22 inch rims and therefore I assume low profile tyres?

There is nothing quite so useless on an off road 4WD than low profile tyres that you cant even mount a kerb with.

So on this theme you mean Sunseekers image = bling and no good in the rough stuff ?

If I had to give my perception of boat brands vs car brands then I see them like this:

Princess - Audi (Well made but unprotentious, solid and nicely styled)
Fairline - BMW (Well made with cutting edge design, with a sporty edge)
Sunseeker - Lamborghini (Performance orientated and with uncompromising design - shouts 'look at me')
Windy - Porche (Undertsated but well designed and finished. Designed totaly around performance and handling)
Jeanneau - Peugeot (Solid and unassuming. Well made for the price, designed for the family and know their market)
Sealine - VW (Well made with clever designs and a model for nearly every budget)
Bayliner - Skoda (Still remembered for their dark years, but quality and design now improved with help from partner brands)
Nimbus - Volvo (Safe, solid with very loyal customers if a little dull. Dont update their designs often but still prone to moments of madness - think Volvo T5R/Nimbus Nova 250R)
Bavaria - Ford (Mass produced and on the whole good quality. Built to a price, but generally only have minor faults)

Thats just how I see them - no doubt other will be different

ah.. but lets add the reasons...
Of course its a bit model dependent bcz, say, Merc make some lovely sports cars, and some really boring saloons too.
But using yours...
Fairline/BMW: great build quality, but absolutely outrageous price for a well specd model
Princess/Audi: successful marriage of style,practicality and performance (saloon)
Sealine/Jag :Old british favourite, but no one quite remembers why

Sunseeker/Range Rover:capabilities that no owner has any interest in testing;must be replaced each year due to minute trim change.
Apologies all round.

A what ? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif you mean the world record holder for top speed of an IPS sports cruiser, the quietest, most fuel efficient, most glamorous is a run of the mill rep mobile /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I am mighty indignant if you please /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think this is rather nearer the mark................ /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ABSMaser.jpg

Actually, I'll go for the performance of the Maser and the usability and practicality of a Renault...good cars btw! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And this 70' looks like a............what?.............Citroen C2 ??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorry press embargo on that pic..........you'll have to wait /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ok so this is prelim stuff and there are no windows in the hull shown yet, but you get the jist..

I have here a report doing just this comparison (for a buyer of a large boat builder) by a firm of management consultants. It broadly agrees, as i would, with all the above posts, especially Jez's above (except sunseeker - lambo which I dont think is a fair comparison)
