Genuine question. Do moboats get charged extra like Cats for quayside berths? Reason for question is that I am at Weymouth tonight and the raggies are rafted three and four deep but there are two Mobos sitting comfortably on individual single berths on the pontoons because "their topsides are too high for adjacent boats to get ashore" ???

Harbour masters will usually try and put similar boats together.
If you can step onto the bathing platform from a lower boat, then that can work in an unconventional way.
But trying to clamber up onto something with much higher topsides is hard. Especially in the dark, and on the way back from the pub.

The answer is in your post, it's not ideal to cross pollinate for the reasons stated. Don't worry they raft motorboats in Weymouth.

The OPs question was are we charged extra for not having people raft on us ... to which the answer is no!

I used to be in La Rochelle and being a Mobo was very handy as the sail boats (about 90% of the boats) were rafted umpteen deep and we very rarely had anyone along side.

Sorry you're right of course Jeremy.
I read it as 'how come motorboats don't have to raft and we do?', but that's not fair of me...
We were once rafted, (we were the inboard boat and only mobo), in Lorient, due to a storm. About 5 sailing boats hanging off our Stbd side. It wasn't very practicle esp as a couple of them had dogs with them! But all good fun and part of the learning curve.

I was in Alderney once getting fuel. A guy pulled up and asked would I mind if he rafted on me so he could load his passengers.

No Problem.

Then .... about a dozen of the biggest blokes I think I have ever seen turned up. To get on board they need to jump down a few feet... so I politely suggested that I did not think my little cruiser was up for the challenge. They were very good about it!

It's funny when you have a yacht next to you that isn't used to a mobo, often the easiest (or only safe) route ashore is across your bathing platform. Most yachties have a strict sense of polite rafting etiquette, which is to hold the shrouds to get on and pass over the foredeck. Walk this way you say - are you sure they ask, what about your privacy? You can see they are uncomfortable with it you have to nearly force them to do the thing that's easiest!
But I still think rafting is one of the great ways of having a chat and a beer with someone new whatever their boat type.

Just as funny as having a group of mobos stood in the cockpit of your sailing boat looking for the swimming platform... :)
