MoBo Snobs ???

Would you MoBo owners say that the more money you have, the bigger more modern boat you own and the bigger snob you are ? Has been my experience.

Anyone who has read my postings will realise I dont have much time for MoBo's. I make no excuse for that. (On seamanship grounds) I find it strange that owners of older small MoBo's are much more friendly and better seamen (as far as a MoBo, seaman can be) than those that own the latest plastic gin palaces.

My first thought was a comment ending in "off".

Why does boat size determine whether someone is a snob or not, irrespective of whether its a MoBo or raggie, most of us buy what we want or simply like, and many of us could afford something much larger or more expensive.

Perhaps its your attitude, maybe bias, or something else which makes you take such a stereotypical view, most of us don't give a damn about boat size as its all about the hobby, not the craft or its size.:D:D:D

Very interesting reply. Quite agree, but stand by my original post that the bigger more modern MoBo skipper is likely to be a bigger snob.

Again, thats been my experience.

Just love boating...big, small, old or new. If I could afford bigger and newer then I would do that in an instant to enable me to go further afield but would it change my attitude?..No, why should it? Still love everything about boating including the majority (by far) of the boating community. Good people, friendly, always willing to help and never deliberately antagonistic but then I guess there are always exceptions to every rule eh Sandyman?? Shame but hey ho.

I find it difficult to reconcile this with the saga of the allegedly stolen battery. The boat in question does not sound like one of the latest gin palaces to me.
 
I don't mind any boats , we have a mixture of yachts and mobos but i think yachties are more sociable and down to earth.

we berthed up next to yachties in East Cowes and Bucklers Hard this weekend and all were really friendly, as they were when we've berthed next to them in the past... berthed up next to several mobo's and irrespective of size, they too have all been fantastic company.

I've only met obstreperous folk whilst underway, mobo and sail, akin to road rage I guess
 
Well, what can I say? I've been into proper boating for 4 1/2 years now, first half in a mobo and now a yacht. There are some really nice people of both fraternities (sp?) and there are some who are perhaps not so pleasant and thoughtfull. SOME of the very large boat owners (mobo AND sail) don't seem to want to associate with tiddlers like me (no reply to a wave, staring studiously ahead etc) and then there are the real boaters who love being on the water and happy to say 'hi' to anyone. I don't worry too much about the others, I'm afraid. Takes all sorts and all that.....rather like life, really, I suppose.
 
It's well known that raggies feel inferior to mobo=ers, they try to keep it secret but it always show through with their childness annoyance at any wash over three inches high and their inability to cope with it. At Watchet we have a fine mix of Mobo and Rag and all mix perfectly and in total harmony. The vast majority of snobs are located on the Solent boating lake. Big fish in small ponds! In the places where real boating takes place and there are tides and rough seas the problem doesn't arise as everyone (mobo and rag) is involved in serious boating requiring skill and determination.

Youre not far wrong (but of course there are exceptions.)
The times I have found this even more striking than Cowes is on an MBM / RYA cruise.

One comment from a large gin palace

" Oh , Im not about to follow him, he's only in a sealine S31 and cant know what he is doing "

Any boat over 10 years old tends to be far more welcoming to raft alongside and its amazing how many owners have had the boats from new or at least 5 years and can handle them better.

Perhaps its just a HM issue in that all the big ones are put together (sensible for ease of mooring) and they just get friendly with each other , but on the odd occasion I have been directed to moor alongside a large boat they have been friendly enough.:)
If you want to really talk about snobs then pick a really big boat and invite yourself on, they are too polite to chuck you off ;)

I wandered down the pontoons with my mates daughters the other weekend - they're under 10 ... and enjoyed themselves looking in all the mobo windows as we went past .... only kids can get away with doing that ... :D

All these years I have been boating and assumed raggies walking passed with their heads on sideways looking the other way and TB coughing have been pig ignorant and now you tell me its in an attempt to afford us privacy .....doh !

I love it when raggie kids shout out

Wow, look at that one daddy, patio doors and look how they keep their dinghy blown up, can we get a crane daddy ?

Just as they are wrenched by the hand and thrown 40ft to the next boat ;)
